Piastri afgebeuld na test in Barcelona: "Mijn nek doet behoorlijk pijn"

Oscar Piastri komt in 2023 in actie voor het team van McLaren. De Australiër is in de tussentijd volop bezig om zijn nieuwe werkgever beter te leren kennen en heeft ondertussen wat F1-kilometers gemaakt in Barcelona.

"Het was goed om weer in het ritme te komen met wat racespecifieke dingen", zegt Piastri op de officiële McLaren-website "We hebben veel dingen besproken en ik heb het gevoel dat ik goede vooruitgang boek. We hebben een aantal oude aspecten opnieuw bekeken die ik al een tijdje niet heb kunnen bekijken, en ik heb behoorlijk veel geleerd over verschillende rijtechnieken."

Piastri reed 150 ronden tijdens een tweedaagse test op het Circuit de Catalunya. "De omstandigheden waren behoorlijk koud en we kregen zelfs een beetje nat weer tijdens het rijden, dus ik was me aan dat alles aan het aanpassen en probeerde zoveel het gevoel weer te krijgen, want het was een beetje roestig."

Dat voelde de voormalig F2, F3 en F4-kampioen meteen na de sessie. "Mijn nek doet behoorlijk pijn, maar het duurt altijd even voordat ik aan een F1-auto gewend ben. Ik kom er aan, ik hou vol en het zou goed moeten zijn om tijdens de kerstperiode wat meer te gaan trainen."

Na zijn titel in de eennahoogste opstapklasse stond Piastri aan de zijlijn bij Alpine in 2022 met het oog op een zitje voor het jaar daarop. "Sinds het einde van de F2 is het altijd het doel geweest om in de F1 te komen, dus ik denk dat alle F1-tests die ik heb gedaan altijd een voorbereiding waren op het krijgen van een stoeltje. Ik denk niet dat mijn mentaliteit is veranderd."

Piastri vertelt verder over de nieuwe samenwerking met McLaren. "Het is een enorme hulp om samen te werken met de ingenieurs en het raceteam waarmee ik volgend jaar zal werken. Het is echt nuttig om die relatie aan te gaan."

"Nu ik een stoel heb en zeker weer ga racen, kunnen we ons concentreren op een paar van de details van een race die ik normaal niet zou doen tijdens het testen - daar is meer focus op geweest omdat het seizoen eraan komt."

Hij moet gewoon kijhard door trainen. Ik schat Norris beter dan Russell en vergelijkbaar met Leclerc en Alonso. Hamilton en verstappen daar weer boven, maar misschien ben ik als Mclaren fan een beetje te bevooroordeeld.

  Awel, ikke nu ook zie. Altijd als rookie de titel halen in 1zitters en 2 middenveldteams in F1 die je een racestoeltje aanbieden - slecht kan hij niet zijn.
  
  F1 is natuurlijk een klasse apart en alle andere klasses waren daartegen ´opstapjes´ - ongeacht kan hij zeker aan een stuurtje draaien, heeft de leergierige instelling en de beste voorbereiding als testpiloot bij Alpine en nu bij McLaren als racepiloot nog voor de start van zijn 1ste seizoen. Norris die zelfs Ricciardo deed verbleken is daarnaast de ideale sparringpartner om meteen tegenover te staan. Mijn verwachtingen zijn hoog....gespannen 😉

  Ja, wat uitstraling en persoonlijkheid betreft begint hij bij mij ook met een 0-1 achterstand in de F1. Echter, besef wel dat dit niet meer dan een vooroordeel kan zijn, want het blijft afwachten.
  En uiteindelijk gaat het wat Oscar op de baan laat zien.
  Ben ook geen fan van Russell maar aan hem gaan we vast nog veel raceplezier beleven...

@Martijn: Piastri is nooit F4 kampioen geweest, werd hij 'slechts' 2e in zijn enige volledige F4 seizoen.
