Aston Martin ziet 2025-wagen als eerste blauwdruk van nieuwe windtunnel

Het omhoog klimmende team van Aston Martin is druk bezig met de bouw van haar nieuwe hoofdkwartier. Met de allernieuwste faciliteiten onder eigendom hoopt het Britse team een paar grote stappen dichterbij te komen aan de top van de koningsklasse. Technisch Directeur van Aston Martin Dan Fallows meent dat haar windtunnel, dat naar verwachting opgeleverd wordt in midden 2024, de eerste effecten zal afgeven op de auto van 2025.

Het megaproject van Aston Martin, dat gebouwd wordt in Silverstone, is in volle gang. Naast een volledig nieuwe productieplantage is het Britse team druk bezig om haar eigen windtunnel uit de grond te stampen. Met de “state of the art” technologieën is het de bedoeling dat het team gekatapulteerd zal worden richting de gebruikelijke top drie van Red Bull, Mercedes en Ferrari.

Technisch Directeur van Aston Martin Dan Fallows vertelt dat de windtunnel ‘online’ zal zijn in 'het midden van 2024'. "We hopen dat we dan op z’n minst een bijdrage kunnen doen aan (de auto van) het 2025-seizoen. Het is nog onder voorbehoud hoe de oplevering zal verlopen, maar dat is onze verwachting."

Tussen het moment van oplevering en de volledige ingebruikneming van de windtunnel zit nog een hoop werk. Het is uiteraard van belang dat de behaalde resultaten vanuit haar windtunnel overeenkomen met de performance op het circuit. Fallows meent dan ook dat zijn team pas de overstap naar haar eigen windtunnel zal maken wanneer alle aspecten volledig op groen licht staan.

"Wanneer je een windtunnel gebruikt moet je een inbedrijfsstellingproces doorgaan. Je moet kunnen testen of je de cijfers krijgt die je verwacht te krijgen. We zijn in de gelukkige positie om gebruik te kunnen maken van de windtunnel van Mercedes. Dat is een faciliteit van hoge kwaliteit, dus we moeten zorgen dat de resultaten van onze faciliteit vergelijkbaar is met die van hen. En dat kost tijd. Het zal ongetwijfeld een faciliteit van wereldklasse worden. Als we daar 24/7 toegang tot hebben dan zal dat zeer belangrijk voor ons zijn."

Ja, ik dacht vroeger ook een tunneltje bouwen met grote ventilator en klaar is kees maar daar komt heel wat meer bij kijken en gaat als gevolg niet aan de vertrouwde F1 snelheid. Tijdrovend zijn daar de ruimte en hoe die kan ingedeeld worden met variabele bewegende wanden - ook de "belt" en het ... [Lees verder]

  Ja, ik dacht vroeger ook een tunneltje bouwen met grote ventilator en klaar is kees maar daar komt heel wat meer bij kijken en gaat als gevolg niet aan de vertrouwde F1 snelheid. Tijdrovend zijn daar de ruimte en hoe die kan ingedeeld worden met variabele bewegende wanden - ook de "belt" en het oppervlak onderaan de wagen, nu zeker met de wagens met zoveel grondeffect vragen daarbij de nodige aandacht. Door dat grondeffect gaat de wagen zich in de grond drukken maar wordt ook gelijk in het midden via de rollhoop vastgehouden om niet van de belt te katapulteren. Om dan de juiste indruk en uitdrukwaarden te bekomen is al zeker geen evidentie. Dat allemaal heeft ook een invloed op de snelheid waarmee die windtunnel operationeel wordt en kan starten met waarnemen. Daarnaast natuurlijk de afstelling van alle sensoren die perfect moeten aligneren met de realiteit.

  Dit wordt in 2023 wel de eerste wagen van Dan Fallows (ex-RB) en Eric Baldin (zonder W! - ex-Mercedes). Het vertrek van Dan viel niet in goede aarde bij RB waar hij chief aero was en nu dus TD bij AM. Chief aero wordt Eric die al dezelfde functie had bij Mercedes. Beide heel gedreven en specialisten in hun vak. Volgens de eerste berichten betreft het (weerom) een volledig andere wagen... dus ook wel benieuwd wat we hiervan zullen zien in de handen van Fernando.

  De laatste races gingen ze al best aardig ten opzichte van het begin van het seizoen. De nieuwe fabriek is nog niet in gebruik dus ik weet niet of we dan al heel veel kunnen verwachten. Ze hebben wel goede kennis ingekocht, ik ben ook erg benieuwd.

  Net daarom - in de 2de helft kregen ze de inbreng van Dan en Eric weliswaar op een concept dat niet van hen was. Je zag meteen een verandering in de performantie en kort daarna moest men al op de 2023 versie focussen. Geen prutsers die ze daarmee aan boord hebben gehaald...

Weet iemand wat de meerwaarde is van een eigen windtunnel. als ze nu de Mercedes tunnel gebruiken die eigenlijk al top is, waarom een eigen tunnel bouwen waar je net zoveel uren gebruik van mag maken
