Leclerc: Mercedes zal zich 'ongetwijfeld' in titelgevecht 2023 mengen

Mercedes heeft een lastig seizoen achter de rug. Het team had een valse start van het 2022-seizoen omdat het de nieuwste generatie F1-auto’s niet onder controle kreeg. Vooral het porpoising fenomeen bracht het team veel hinder, waardoor een groot deel van het seizoen gebruikt werd om dichterbij aan titelvechters Ferrari en Red Bull te komen. Ferrari-coureur Charles Leclerc meent echter dat Mercedes’ comeback in 2023 vrijwel een zekerheid is.

Het team van Mercedes leek haar W13-bolide maar niet onder controle te krijgen. Het stuiterende effect genaamd porpoising was een groot probleem voor het team waardoor het veel kostbare tijd moest investeren om het probleem glad te strijken. Hierdoor konden Red Bull en Ferrari zonder een derde titelconcurrent om de punten vechten. Richting het einde van de tweede seizoenshelft begon het erop te lijken dat Mercedes grip op de situatie kreeg. Met een sprint- en Grand Prix- overwinning voor George Russell leek Mercedes goede stappen te maken om weer een factor te zijn in de duels voor een podiumplaats.

Ferrari-coureur Charles Leclerc wist met hakken over de sloot als tweede in het rijdersklassement te eindigen. De Monegask versloeg hiermee Red Bull-coureur Sergio Peréz. In 2022 had Leclerc al op meerdere momenten vlagen van Mercedes’ terugkomst kunnen ervaren. Leclerc meent dan ook dat het titelgevecht van 2023 zomaar tussen drie teams zou kunnen gaan. 'Ik geloof dat Mercedes in het gevecht (van 2023) zal zijn. We hebben gezien hoeveel zij zichzelf gedurende het seizoen hebben verbeterd. Ik denk dat ze nu door hebben welke fouten ze hebben gemaakt. Normaal gesproken is dit een teken van een stijgende lijn. Hopelijk zal het gevecht van volgend jaar tussen drie teams gaan.'

Dat hebben ze dit jaar ook gedaan door hub gejlaag rond het gestuiter. Na de regelaanpassing was Ferrari kansloos op enige overwinning.
