Welke coureurs veroverden topresultaten en wie presteerden er ondermaats? Vandaag in deel achttien: Carlos Sainz, de prestaties kunnen beter.

Het Formule 1-seizoen 2022 van Carlos Sainz

Voor het eerst in zijn loopbaan kreeg Carlos Sainz dit jaar de kans om echt mee te strijden om de zeges. De Ferrari kon, vooral in de eerste seizoenshelft, het tempo van de Red Bulls zeer goed bijhouden. Sainz kon er echter niet van profiteren, eigen fouten gooiden meer dan eens roet in het eten voor de Madrileen.

Sainz begon het seizoen zeer goed met een tweede plaats in de seizoensopener in Bahrein en een derde plaats op het chaotische Jeddah Corniche Circuit. In Australië en Emilia Romagna gooide hij zijn eigen ruiten in. De Spaanse coureur ging in beide races op vrijwel identieke wijze de mist in, tweemaal spinde hij op een knullige manier en gooide hij een grote hoeveelheid punten in de prullenbak. Later in het jaar ging hij ook de fout in in Austin en in mindere mate in Japan.

De overige twee uitvalbeurten van Sainz, in Azerbeidzjan en Oostenrijk, werden echter niet veroorzaakt door zijn eigen foutjes. De Spanjaard kreeg te maken met de betrouwbaarheidsproblemen waar zijn team Ferrari vrijwel het gehele seizoen mee worstelde. Sainz had pech, zoveel pech dat zelfs de ANWB niets voor hem zou kunnen betekenen. In beide gevallen ging een dikke puntenfinish niet door en verloor Sainz veel terrein in het wereldkampioenschap.

Dat Sainz heus wel een potje kan sturen werd dit jaar tevens duidelijk. In Silverstone gaf de Spaanse coureur zijn visitekaartje af aan de buitenwereld. Hij vertrok vanaf pole position en hij hield vervolgens zijn hoofd koel in een chaotische en spectaculaire wedstrijd. In de slotfase pakte hij de koppositie en won hij de Grand Prix, het was zijn eerste Formule 1-zege uit zijn loopbaan. Het smaakte naar meer maar die hoop werd geen werkelijkheid. Het was voor hem dus alleen maar beter worden in de komende jaren.

Het plan van Carlos Sainz voor het seizoen 2023

Sainz begint volgend jaar aan zijn derde seizoen in dienst van Ferrari. Dit jaar werd hij verslagen door teamgenoot Charles Leclerc, in 2021 was hij zelf de Monegask de baas. De Spanjaard zal in 2023 wel moeten gaan presteren. Ferrari zal waarschijnlijk geen eerste coureur aanwijzen en als Sainz dit zo wil houden moet hij het Leclerc lastig gaan maken. De verwachtingen zullen hoog zijn en Sainz zal die waar moeten maken. Foutjes zoals in Imola en Melbourne kan hij niet meer maken.

Ik heb wel respect voor Carlos (zonder t) Hij heeft niet het talent van Leclerc maar hij is een harde werker en daar kan je ver mee komen. Na een lastige start heeft hij zich goed terug geknokt!

Hij vind zichzelf belangrijker dan Ferrari en dat kan niet iedereen waarderen maar het is wel een winnaarsmentaliteit.
