Contractverlenging was belangrijk voor Albon: "Klinkt misschien gek"

Alexander Albon keerde dit jaar terug in de Formule 1. De Thaise Brit reed voor het team van Williams en dat deed hij zeker niet slecht. Albon kreeg contractverlenging en is dus verzeker van een plekje op de grid in 2022. Met zijn nieuwe contract kwam zijn doel voor dit jaar uit.

Albon stond in 2021 aan de zijlijn na een tegenvallend seizoen bij Red Bull Racing in 2020. Dit jaar keerde hij terug maar nu in dienst van Williams. De Thaise coureur liet zien dat hij het zeker nog niet verleerd is en hij was direct veel sneller dan zijn teamgenoot Nicholas Latifi. Albon pakte meerdere keren punten en presteerde soms beter dan men verwachtte van het materiaal.

Voor Albon was het echter belangrijk dat hij niet door het ijs zou zakken. De Thai wilde namelijk koste wat het kost actief blijven in de Formule 1. Hij wordt geciteerd door Motorsportweek: "Als ik eerlijk ben was het hoofddoel om terug te keren in de Formule 1 en daar te blijven. Het klinkt misschien een beetje gek maar het is zeker de waarheid. Wanneer je een éénjarig contract hebt is er geen garantie voor nog een jaar. Dat is nu wel gelukt."
