Schumacher in voetsporen van vader: "Ik heb altijd een band gehad met Mercedes"

Zijn nieuwe Mercedes-outfit maar net uit de verpakking, werd Mick Schumacher gelijk ondervraagd door zijn nieuwe werkgever in een online-video. Met de komst van Schumacher treedt de voormalig Haas-coureur in de voetsporen van zijn vader en racelegende Michael Schumacher, die in zijn jeugd en op het einde van zijn F1-carrière voor de renstal uitkwam.

"Het is geweldig nieuws", antwoordde Schumacher op de vraag hoe het voelt om zich bij Mercedes te voegen. "Ik heb altijd een band gehad met het team vanwege mijn familiegeschiedenis, maar ook vanwege mijn tijd in de Formule 3, mijn aanwezigheid daar toen ik jong was en de relatie met Toto Wolff."

De 23-jarige rijder vindt het jammer dat hij niet meer op de grid staat, maar kijkt wel vooruit om mee te werken aan de ontwikkeling van de nieuwe Mercedes. "Ik ben enthousiast. Ik heb de W13 zien veranderen gedurende het seizoen. Er zijn stappen gemaakt in het seizoen van een moeilijk begin naar een racewinnende bolide. Ik ben enthousiast over wat volgend jaar gaat gebeuren en ik wil een heel belangrijk steentje bijdragen. Hopelijk kunnen we vechten om de kampioenschappen."

Schumacher senior reed van 2010 tot en 2012 voor de F1-grootmacht uit Brackley. Na een kort pensioen van enkele jaren, verleidde voormalig teambaas en vertrouweling van de Duitser, Ross Brawn, de zevenvoudig kampioen om weer in te stappen en was daarmee één van de grondleggers voordat de Mercedes-formatie zeer succesvol werd.

Nu Schumacher junior ook bij Mercedes aan de slag gaat, betekent dat veel voor hem. "Ik ben trots dat ik hier deel van mag ga uitmaken. Hopelijk kan ik het team vooruit helpen en mijn kennis hiervoor gebruiken." De voormalig F3 -en F2-kampioen zijn laatste bezoek aan de fabriek was in 2014. Acht jaar later is er volgens de Duitser veel veranderd. "Hoe het team is gegroeid is zeer indrukwekkend. Het laat het niveau zien waar Mercedes nu staat. Ik ben blij dat ik hier onderdeel van mag zijn."

De 23-jarige heeft door zijn twee seizoenen in de Formule 1 de nodige ervaring opgedaan, met name met de nieuwe generaties wagens. De Duitser wil het Mercedes-grandprix-duo Lewis Hamilton en George Russell helpen in de jacht op succes. "Hopelijk kan ik hen van buitenaf ondersteunen en het simulatorwerk neemt hiervoor ook een belangrijke plaats in. Behalve dat ik mijn kennis deel wil ik ook veel bijleren wat ik kan gebruiken in mijn verdere carrière."

Schumacher reed in 2021 en 2022 voor Haas als Grand Prix-coureur, maar kon de Amerikaanse teamleiding niet overtuigen voor het tekenen van een nieuwe overeenkomst voor 2023 en daarna. Verkassen naar een ander team voor een F1-racestoeltje zat er dus niet meer in. Doordat Mercedes- reservecoureur Nyck de Vries uitkomt voor AlphaTauri ontstond er een vacature bij Mercedes. Schumacher zag zijn kans schoon. De officiële banden met Ferrari werden afgelopen week verbroken en de overstap naar Mercedes werd volbracht.

Pff speciale talenten rijden in een slechte auto en vallen dan op ,Max Russel allonso vettel.
,hij valt alleen op door de schades en zijn achternaam begrijp niet wat Merc in hem ziet.

  Dat Mick Schumacher geen bijzonder talent is mag duidelijk zijn maar hij is ook niet zo slecht als U doet voorkomen.
  Haas was niet het beste team voor hem om te debuteren, die waren meer geïnteresseerd in de korting op de Ferrari motoren dan in Mick. Daarnaast hebben ze niet de ervaring en organisatie om een rookie op de juiste wijze te begeleiden. Dat de tweede rookie, de rus, nog slechter was heeft hem ook niet geholpen.
  Dus ik geef hem nog steeds het voordeel van de twijfel, en zijn nieuwe rol bij Mercedes zou best wel eens louterend kunnen werken.
