Ricciardo's ontslag viel zwaar voor Brown: "Wij houden van Daniel"

Het leven van een teambaas gaat niet altijd over rozen. McLaren CEO Zak Brown ondervond dat rondom de situatie met de populaire Daniel Ricciardo. De Australiër was zeer geliefd binnen het team, maar door tegenvallende prestaties werd de meervoudig Grand Prix-winnaar de deur toegewezen. Die beslissing was niet gemakkelijk voor Brown.

"Het was zwaar", begon de Amerikaanse baas in een interview op het YouTube-kanaal van McLaren. "Wij houden allemaal van Daniel. Hij geeft veel positieve energie in de garage. Maar soms gaat het niet altijd zoals je had gehoopt."

Voordat Ricciardo naar McLaren was hij een van de meest gewilde coureurs in de paddock. Van die status is weinig over na twee tegenvallende seizoenen bij het Engelse team. De Grand Prix-zege in Italië 2021 kon dat niet verbloemen.

"Het blijft een groot mysterie. Daniel heeft zeker weten het talent. Hij liet het zien op Monza. Hij won acht Grand Prixs", stak de McLaren CEO hem een hart onder de riem. "De situatie was voor ons allen frustrerend. Maar die ene dag in Monza is nog steeds mijn favoriete autosportmoment in mijn dertigjarige loopbaan", doelde Brown op de 1-2 op heillge Italiaanse grond met Ricciardo als overwinnaar.

De vervanger van de Australiër is zijn jongere landgenoot Oscar Piastri. McLaren kaapte de talentvolle rijder weg bij Alpine. En niet zonder reden. "We denken dat een Oscar een sensatie wordt. Als je kijkt naar zijn carrière won hij heel veel kampioenschappen in zijn eerste jaar, wat dus een indicatie geeft hoe speciaal iemand is."

Piastri moet het opnemen tegen Lando Norris bij de legendarische renstal. De Brit is nog een jonkie op papier, maar al heel ervaren. Dit gecombineerd met jong talent zorgt voor veel enthousiasme bij Brown met het oog op de toekomst.

De keuze voor bepaalde rijders put de Amerikaan uit een dosis ervaring. "Ik loop al een tijdje mee en ik weet wanneer iets goed lijkt of iets niet goed lijkt. Ik heb veel F1-teams, IndyCar-teams en NASCAR-teams, sportcar-teams en zelfs drageace-teams van dichtbij gezien. En goede en niet goede dingen zie je overal terug en lijkt veel op elkaar, ongeacht de raceklasse. Met mijn ervaring krijg ik genoeg indrukken wat zich afspeelt binnen een garage."

  Dat gaat vast niet gebeuren, Ricciardo is zijn mojo kwijt en is al wat ouder.
  Denk ook niet dat Max die inspraak heeft.

Nou dacht ik dat op Monza Lando zijn teammaat niet in mocht halen, maar ik kan het mis hebben.......wat vaker gebeurt.

Ben benieuwd, het kan ook maar zijn dat Piastri (in eerste instantie) ruim) achter Norris moet aansluiten en hoe gaat hij daar dan mee om? Blijft afwachten...

De gevulde teambaas met het windtunnelhaar van het roemruchte papaya oranje team uit Woking kan zich vooralsnog beter druk maken over de auto van 2023.
Daar zal Lando het zeker mee eens zijn!

Ik denk dat het met Ricciardo en Norris samen lachen grieren brullen was en het is een aardig gast en PR technisch ook interessant. Maar dat alleen is geen reden om hem aan te houden, om eerlijk te zijn snap ik RB ook niet, ik had hem die kans niet gegeven.
