Vader Vettel denkt terug aan kartdagen: "Hij was dol op racen in de regen"

Sinds vorige maand is Sebastian Vettel geen Formule 1-coureur meer. De Duitser ging na de Grand Prix van Abu Dhabi met pensioen en kreeg een passend afscheid. Viervoudig wereldkampioen Vettel ontving veel complimenten en ook zijn vader heeft louter goeie herinneringen aan de loopbaan van zijn zoon.

Vettel debuteerde in 2007 in de Formule 1 tijdens de Amerikaanse Grand Prix als eenmalige invaller bij het team van BMW Sauber. Later dat jaar kreeg hij een plekje bij Toro Rosso en daarna groeide hij door en reed hij voor onder andere Red Bull en Ferrari. Al sinds de begindagen van zijn loopbaan krijgt hij onvoorwaardelijke steun van zijn vader Norbert.

Hairpin

Norbert Vettel was vrijwel altijd aanwezig bij de races van zijn zoon. Vettel senior hielp zijn zoon in diens begindagen in de karts en reisde uren om de eerste kart op te pikken. Tegenover de media-afdeling van de Formule 1 kijkt Norbert Vettel terug op die dagen: "Hij was zo klein, ik moest wat materiaal aanbrengen aan zijn pedalen zodat hij kon gasgeven en remmen. We moesten het stoeltje eruit halen omdat de stoel te groot was! We gingen naar een circuit met een hairpin vlakbij de plek waar ik toen werkte. Ik stond naast de baan en gaf bij de hairpin aan waar hij moest remmen. Dat was het eerste wat hij leerde."

Regenrijder

Vader Vettel kwam er toen achter dat zijn zoon bepaalde grote talenten achter. In zijn latere Formule 1-leven toonde Vettel zich bijvoorbeeld zeer sterk in de regen. Norbert Vettel zag dit al ontstaan in de jonge jaren van zijn zoon: "Sebastian was dol op racen in de regen. Ik vroeg hem om naar binnen te komen voor de lunch en dat hij zijn zusje even moest later rijden. Hij zei echter dat hij in de wagen bleef zitten. Hij wilde er niet uit! Hij wilde blijven rijden, blijven leren. Hij was echt fascinerend."

  Ja, maar dat heeft elke coureur wel. Vettel heeft echt een geweldige record als het gaat om regenraces. Zn eerste 2 overwinningen waren bv ook in de regen

  Daarnaast moet je niet vergeten dat Vettel onder enorme druk van Hamilton stond, die op dat moment de snelle rondetijden aan mekaar reeg.....

Weet ik wel, maar zoals bij zoveel
Artikelen, waar staat, hij was heel goed in,,,,
kun je overal wel een moment erbij halen
waar t ff fout ging,,
Overigens begon ik van t vingertje van Vettel
een behoorlijke hekel te krijgen, maar zoals
hij afgelopen seizoen nog rond ging, dikke plus
voor die Alte👍🏻👍🏻

  Ja, zn teamgenoot ging er dan ook keihard af. Spa vorig jaar riep hij hetzelfde, toen stond ie niet veel later bij het wrak van Norris terwijl hijzelf keurig naar P5 reed met een Aston Martin. Wij hebben altijd makkelijk praten, maar iemand als Vettel kan echt wel inschatten wanneer de coureurs geen controle meer hebben.
