Russell stuwt Mercedes voorwaarts: "We moeten de lat blijven verhogen"

George Russell kan terug kijken op een sterk eerste seizoen als coureur voor het F1-team van Mercedes. In de eerste seizoenshelft pakte de Brit de verloren kansen van voorliggers Red Bull en Ferrari hier en daar op, in de tweede helft scoorde Russell in Brazilië zijn allereerste Grand Prix-overwinning. Samen met teamgenoot Lewis Hamilton werden de puntenscores gemaximaliseerd, Russell hoopt echter dat het 2023-seizoen betere resultaten voor zijn team zal genereren.

Bij de start van het 2022-seizoen mocht George Russell officieel deel gaan uitmaken van het F1-team van Mercedes. Zijn droom werd eindelijk maar toch realiteit. Met de nieuwste generatie van F1-auto’s in zicht had zijn nieuwe werkgever moeite om het nieuwe aeroconcept te ontgrendelen. Hierdoor moesten hij en teamgenoot Lewis Hamilton het gros van 2022 spenderen om concurrenten Red Bull en Ferrari bij te houden. Gedurende het seizoen leek het team echter mooie stappen voorwaarts te maken, met als hoogtepunt een sprint- en Grand Prix-overwinning bij de Grand Prix van Brazilië voor de Mercedes-nieuwkomer.

Nu de Formule 1 in een diepe winterslaap is gedoken, krijgt Russell de kans om terug én vooruit te kijken. Tegenover de host van BBC Norfolks’ podcast Racing Torque vertelt Russell: "We lopen natuurlijk nu nog achter op Red Bull en Ferrari, maar ik ben er zeker van dat we bij de eerste race van volgend jaar in een sterkere positie zullen verkeren dan dit jaar. Ik ben hier voor de lange rit en ondanks dat ik graag overwinningen wou behalen en meer voor het 2022-kampioenschap wou kunnen vechten, denk ik dat onze moeilijkheden een goede basis neerzetten voor ons als team. Ik hoop dat ik tien jaar vanaf nu op 2022 terug kan kijken en kan zeggen "dit 2022-seizoen maakte deel uit van een reis."

Ook laat de 24-jarige coureur weten dat hij hoopt op een flinke voorwaartse stap van zijn team: "Ik kan niet met veel trots van dit seizoen weglopen omdat we vierde in het kampioenschap zijn geworden. We moeten de lat blijven verhogen", sluit Russell af.

Je kunt de lat blijven verhogen zoveel je wilt, maar als het je niet lukt om er overheen te springen, heb je daar verdraaid weinig aan. Hoe hoog kunnen George en Mercedes springen? We zullen het volgend jaar zien.

Russell stuwt helemaal niets. De enige coureur met een fors aandeel in de stappen vooruit is Hamilton die een groot deel van z’n seizoen opgeofferd heeft om de wagen beter te doorgronden door als test dummy te fungeren.
