Hamilton wijst naar korte F1-preseasontests: "Uitdaging groter dan ooit"

Op het gebied van performance viel de W13-bolide van Mercedes flink tegen. Na in 2021 nog de constructeursitel te hebben binnengesleept, moest het F1-kamp van de Duitse autofabrikant een flink deel van het 2022-seizoen van de Formule 1 investeren om de auto te verbeteren. Het betekende een geluk bij een ongeluk, want hierdoor kreeg diens coureur Lewis Hamilton de kans om een nóg hechtere band met zijn team te creëren. Met de preseasontest in voor het 2023-seizoen in Bahrein op de agenda, meent Hamilton dat het belangrijker dan ooit is om de auto zo goed mogelijk te testen.

Met de start van het 2022-seizoen van de Formule 1 werd er gebruik gemaakt van een geheel nieuwe generatie F1-auto’s. Vooral op aerodynamisch vlak trachtte de koningsklasse een stap in de juiste richting te zetten om de snelste coureurs ter wereld beter met elkaar te kunnen laten racen. Het aeroconcept zorgde echter voor hinder bij een aantal F1-teams, waaronder Mercedes.

Het porpoising fenomeen bleek een lastig probleem waardoor zevenvoudig wereldkampioen en tevens Mercedes-coureur Lewis Hamilton zijn titelzicht voor 2022 opzij moest zetten om te proberen de problemen van de W13-bolide zo snel mogelijk glad te strijken. Mercedes’ moeilijkheden betekende een uitgelezen kans voor Hamilton om een nieuw niveau van samenwerking met zijn team te bereiken. In een exclusief interview met Channel 4 Sport spreekt Hamilton over de problemen van zijn team.

Op de vraag of Hamilton al volgend seizoen zijn teamgenoot George Russell een lesje moet leren, antwoordt hij: "Ik focus meer op mezelf en hoe goed ik het presteer. Ik ben nu veel meer tevreden met de auto (dan bij de seizoenstart) en hopelijk hebben we volgend jaar een nog betere auto", vertelt Hamilton.

Hamilton’s reflecties groeien door naar het volgende onderwerp: het testen van de auto. "Op dinsdag ga ik zelfs meedoen aan de test", vertelt Hamilton over de naseizoenstest in Abu Dhabi die afgelopen november werd afgewerkt. "Daar doe ik normaal gesproken nooit aan mee. We hebben volgend jaar minder testdagen, waardoor het steeds belangrijker wordt om meters in de auto te maken. Ik wil nog meer een rol gaan spelen in die ontwikkeling. Om het afgelopen jaar zoveel deel uit te hebben gemaakt in de ontwikkeling is iets wat ik heel erg koester. Maar, ja, volgend jaar zal de uitdaging groter dan ooit zijn", sluit Hamilton af.

Mooi om te zien dat er nog steeds vuur zit in Lewis.......en dat heeft hij volgend jaar hard nodig.
Niet alleen tegen Redbull en Ferrari, maar ook tegen vriend George.

  Enfin, ik denk dat hij tijdens de monopoly winterstop dacht dat er weer een gespreid bedje zeepkar voor hem zou klaar staan.
