Lawson kent gevaren Japans avontuur: "Zelfs Pierre had het lastig in zijn eerste races"

Red Bull-talent Liam Lawson mag zich in 2023 gaan bewijzen in Japan. De Nieuw-Zeelander gaat immers in de Super Formula rijden en hoopt via die weg de stap naar de Formule 1 te kunnen zetten. Lawson onderschat de Japanse klasse echter niet en weet dat Europese ervaring niets zegt.

Lawson reed dit jaar in de Formule 2 en kwam tevens in actie tijdens een aantal vrije trainingen van de Formule 1. De Red Bull Junior-coureur reed een paar vrije trainingen voor AlphaTauri en uiteindelijk ook het grote Red Bull Racing. Lawson hoopt de Formule 1 te bereiken via dezelfde weg als Pierre Gasly. De Fransman reed immers ook in de Super Formula alvorens hij de koningsklasse van de autosport bereikte.

Lokale coureurs

Lawson gaat rijden voor Team Mugen en hij zal het direct zwaar gaan krijgen. De Nieuw-Zeelandse coureur laat aan Motorsport.com weten niets te onderschatten: "Het duidelijkste wat ik begreep na het kijken naar de Super Formula, was hoe goed de lokale coureurs zijn. Puur omdat je in de Formule 2 hebt gereden of actief bent geweest bij een Formule 1-team, betekent dat niet dat je het hier meteen goed gaat doen."

Progressie boeken

De Nieuw-Zeelander heeft zich goed voorbereid en hij zag dat coureurs in het verleden vaak moeite hadden met de stap naar de Super Formula. Lawson: "Zelfs Pierre had het in zijn eerste paar races nogal lastig. Na mijn ervaring bij de Super Formula-test kan ik begrijpen dat het moeilijk is. In de test bestond de top tien uit allemaal Japanse coureurs. Ik wist dat ik niet meteen de goede snelheid zou hebben. Het zal mij moeite gaan kosten, dus het gaat om het zo snel mogelijk progressie boeken."

Nieuwe autos (SF23) kan misschien een voordeel zijn. De lokalen hebben immers veel baankennis en in combi met auto kennis is hun voorsprong toch iets groter.

Dat laatste aspect valt nu iets weg. Toch denk ik niet dat Lawson F1 gaat halen en dat dit een soort Ticktum/O'ward avontuur gaat worden.
