Leclerc: Brief van Vettel vooraf F1-debuut 'veelbetekenend'

Voor de laatste Grand Prix van het 2022-seizoen werd verreden, keek Ferrari-coureur Charles Leclerc terug op zijn samenkomen met de uitzwaaiende Sebastian Vettel. De twee waren namelijk in 2019- en ’20 teamgenoten bij de Scuderia, waardoor Leclerc werd gevraagd naar zijn ervaringen met de viervoudig wereldkampioen, alvorens de Duitser afscheid van de Formule 1 nam.

In 2017, terwijl Charles Leclerc nog aan het F2-seizoen deelnam, werkte de Monegask heel wat simulatorwerk af om Ferrari en Sebastian Vettel te helpen in het gevecht om de wereldtitel. Vettel probeerde – net als in 2018 – om titelconcurrent Lewis Hamilton bij het winnen van het rijderskampioenschap weg te houden. Echter mislukte de poging van Ferrari (en Vettel) om de inmiddels zevenvoudig wereldkampioen tot een stoppen te brengen.

Ondanks dat de vele uren in de simulator uiteindelijk voor niets zijn geweest, blikt Leclerc terug op een speciaal moment waarop hij een brief van Vettel kreeg met daarin een bedankje voor zijn harde werken. "Hij was geweldig. Ik weet nog dat toen ik in de Formule 2 zat en ik simulatorwerk verrichte, het niet heel gemakkelijk werk was. Het is namelijk heel vermoeiend en ik dacht dat Seb (Vettel) waarschijnlijk niet eens doorhad wie er op de simulator zat. Maar toen kreeg op een dag een brief waarin hij me bedankte voor al mijn harde werk. Dat betekende toentertijd heel veel voor mij."

Vanaf 2018 maakte Leclerc zijn F1-debuut door voor het team van Alfa Romeo te gaan rijden. De Monegask wist meteen al een goede indruk te maken, waardoor hij het daaropvolgende seizoen al de doorstap mocht maken naar Ferrari. Zijn promotie betekende dat Leclerc teamgenoten werd met Vettel in de jaren 2019- en '20. Leclerc blikt terug op die bewogen periode waarin hij teamgenoten was met de viervoudig wereldkampioen.

"In 2019 en 2020 werden we teamgenoten. Toen heb ik veel van hem geleerd. We hadden op de baan onze intense momenten, maar buiten het circuit is het onderlinge respect nooit veranderd. Hij was er altijd voor mij wanneer ik in een moeilijke periode verkeerde. Dat was heel anders dan met mijn vroegere teamgenoten. Natuurlijk is er altijd rivaliteit in de Formule 1 aanwezig. Er is altijd een interne strijd in het team tussen teamgenoten, maar hij was altijd heel behulpzaam. Hij zal zeer gemist worden. Ik weet zeker dat hij zal genieten van zijn vrije tijd buiten het circuit en dat hij dingen zal vinden die hem blij maken", sluit Leclerc af.

Vind het echt mooi om overal te lezen (bij zoveel coureurs) hoeveel die man voor een ieder heeft betekend. Soms mijn inziens te keihard aangepakt door de pers (Ziggo was daar ook heel goed in) had het ook niet altijd makkelijk en deed ook niet alles perfect natuurlijk. Maar ik ga deze man missen. Komt de fia met de nieuwe regel nu qua statements waardoor je nog meer media gecoachte antwoorden op alles krijgt. Gelukkig hebben we Hamilton, Alonso en Verstappen nog. Plus nog een paar die soms wel gewoon zeggen wat ze denken.
