Zhou blikt terug: trots op puntscore in Bahrein na online backlash

Zhou Guanyu was de enige F1-rookie in 2022 met een fulltime stoeltje. Met team Alfa Romeo als werkgever werd China voor het eerst in de geschiedenis van de Formule 1 als land door een coureur vertegenwoordigd. Vooraf zijn debuutrace in Bahrein, kreeg Zhou online veel te maken met commentaar van vele toeschouwers dat zijn F1-contract alleen te danken was aan zijn nationaliteit en zijn ondersteunende partnerschap. Na een slechte start bij zijn eerste race vocht Zhou zich echter terug naar een tiende eindplaats, wat betekende dat de rookie meteen een puntenscore bemachtigde bij zijn debuut-Grand Prix.

Tijdens zijn eerste Grand Prix, die verreden werd in Bahrein, ging het bij de start niet helemaal van een leien dakje. Zhou Guanyu kreeg tijdens de start van de race met anti-stall te maken, waarna hij helemaal terugviel naar de staart van het F1-veld. Dankzij een goede pace én strategie vocht de Chinees zich terug naar de tiende plaats, wat betekende dat de online commentaar op de coureur meteen al flink verminderde.

"Dat was geweldig", begint Zhou in een eindejaarsinterview tegenover Autosport. "Vooral als je kijkt naar alles (online commentaar) wat ik tijdens de winterstop te verduren kreeg. Wanneer ik werd aangekondigd, beoordeelden veel mensen mij op mijn nationaliteit. Het was niet echt een geweldig gevoel wanneer je hier bent om te vechten voor je droom."

"Maar achteraf ben ik dankbaar dat ik tijdens mijn eerste race meteen een punt wist te scoren. Het gehaat werd meteen minder. Om op de baan te laten zien wat ik kan, betekent veel voor me. Mensen begonnen namelijk hun mening over mij te veranderen. Ze leerden mij kennen."

Zhou heeft net als vele collega’s van hem een bewogen seizoen achter de rug. De Chinees liet in 2022 meerdere momenten van zijn talent zien, echter kende de coureur ook vele pechmomenten. Zo viel de Alfa Romeo-coureur maar liefst vijfmaal uit, met als laagtepunt zijn bizarre crash bij de start van de Grand Prix van Groot-Brittannië. Samen met teamgenoot Valtteri Bottas hoopt Zhou op een stabiele start van 2023, zodat het team van Alfa Romeo voorwaartse stappen kan zetten richting de subtop van de koningsklasse.

@THW Das geen eerlijke vergelijking, Bottas zit immers om de haverklap peentjes te zweten in zijn Finse Zhouna.

De coureur waarvan je haast zou vergeten dat ie op de grid staat.

Je zou denken dat hij met het Chinese potentieal aantal kijkers fans veel meer in de picture zou worden gebracht, maar het is grijsheid troef rond de man, op de baan en ernaast.

  Daar ben ik het totaal niet mee eens. Deze man heeft exact gedaan wat hij moest doen en zelfs nog iets beter. Het is geen spectaculaire rijder maar wel een hele stabiele coureur. Regelmatig sneller dan Bottas die veel meer ervaring heeft en hij heeft geen domme crashes gemaakt. Allemaal leuk en aardig de Yuki's en Schumachers van deze wereld maar in vergelijking met Zhou is Zhou veel verder en een veel betere coureur.

  Bottas zal wel peentjes zweten; hij heeft maar 8x zoveel punten behaald als zijn teamgenoot en dat is natuurlijk veel te mager.

  THW daar heeft Bottas dan ook 16 keer zo lang over gedaan.
  Zhou was al afgeschreven vóór zijn debut hier op het forum terwijl hij in de f2 echt zo slecht niet was, hij is mij sws niet tegen gevallen.
