Russell verklaart hulpactie bij Zhou-crash: "Meer een menselijke reactie"

George Russell kende dit jaar een indrukwekkend seizoen in de Formule 1. De Brit reed in zijn eerste volledige Mercedes-seizoen voltreffelijk en was direct sneller dan zijn ervaren teamgenoot Lewis Hamilton. In Silverstone maakte hij tevens veel indruk toen hij zijn auto achterliet om polshoogte te nemen bij de zwaar gecrashte Guanyu Zhou. Hij ziet dat zelf als een menselijke reactie.

De Britse Grand Prix op het circuit van Silverstone was één van de meest spectaculaire races van het jaar. Vooral de huiveringwekkende crash van Alfa Romeo-coureur Guanyu Zhou in de openingsronde staat bij veel mensen nog op het netvlies. Russell was betrokken bij de crash maar zijn Mercedes had slechts minimale schade. Toch klom Russell uit zijn wagen en sprintte hij naar Zhou om te kijken of hij kon helpen.

Door zijn hulpactie kon Russell zijn race niet meer vervolgen, het leidde tot de nodige frustratie. Ondanks zijn uitvalbeurt in zijn thuisrace kreeg hij wel veel lof. In gesprek met Motorsport.com kijkt Russell terug op het opvallende moment in Silverstone: "Ik denk dat als ik mij in diezelfde positie zou bevinden, ik zo snel mogelijk alle hulp zou willen ontvangen. Je weet namelijk niet wat er daarna gaat gebeuren, misschien vat de auto wel vlam. Het was misschien meer een menselijke reactie dan een reactie van een autocoureur."

Hoewel zijn fout was het wel een mooie reactie. Russell dacht volgens mij echt dat het goed mis was.

Inderdaad een menselijke reactie, vooral omdat je weet dat je mede veroorzaker bent aan zo'n crash.

Hoewel zijn fout was het wel een mooie reactie. Russell dacht volgens mij echt dat het goed mis was.

  Yep. Maar buiten dat Georgie (weer) een groot aandeel in een klapper had is de 1e reactie gewoon een pure, menselijke reactie. Fijn om George ook een keer zo te zien. De rest van het jaar was een prima acteer prestatie namelijk. Maar ik heb dan ook niks met Russell, ik vind het een gemaakte trekpop. Voor ie lacht kijkt ie eerst naar Toto of het mag.
