Audi deelt helder doel: "Willen competitief zijn in jaar drie"

In 2026 betreedt Audi de Formule 1. De Duitse autobouwer gaat samenwerken met het team van Sauber en men barst van de ambitie. Aangezien er in 2026 nieuwe motorreglementen gaan gelden, kan men direct succesvol zijn. Audi heeft een langetermijnsplan opgesteld en Adam Baker geeft aan dat er pas na drie jaar succes wordt verwacht.

De komst van Audi naar de Formule 1 hing al geruime tijd in de lucht. Samen met zustermerk Porsche waren ze aanwezig bij gesprekken over de nieuwe motorregels en voorafgaande de Belgische Grand Prix kwam het hoge woord eruit. De Duitsers betreden de sport en gaan de krachtbronnen zelf bouwen in Duitsland. Later werd bekend dat ze vanaf 2026 gaan samenwerken met Sauber.

Realistisch doel

Aangezien de nieuwe motorregels in 2026 voor de nodige aardverschuivingen kunnen zorgen, is er ook een kans dat Audi direct kan heersen. Bij de autobouwer denkt men daar echter iets anders over. CEO van Audi Formula Racing, Adam Baker, laat aan AS weten wat de plannen precies zijn: "We willen competitief zijn in drie jaar. Dat is een realistisch doel. We willen in ons derde jaar gaan meevechten voor de overwinningen."

Budget

Audi is vooralsnog het enige nieuwe merk dat zijn komst naar de Formule 1 heeft toegezegd voor 2026. Volgens Baker spelen de nieuwe duurzame regels en de groeiende populariteit daar een belangrijke rol bij: "De Formule 1 heeft de kosten ook flink omlaag gehaald en dat maakt het nog aantrekkelijker. De uitgaven voor de krachtbronnen voor 2026 hebben ook een uitgaveplafond en dat, samen met de lagere kosten, zorgt voor zekerheid over langdurige budgetten. Als een fantastisch platform wil om je kennis en kunde te laten zien, dan is dit de beste plek."

Als de motor beter is dan die van de anderen zou het kunnen.
Is de motor evengoed dan die van de rest dan is 3 jaar waarschijnlijk nog net iets te optimistisch.
Is de motor net niet goed genoeg dan is 3 jaar een utopie en kan je eerder aan 5 jaar of meer gaan denken zoals Renol al jaren aantoont.

  Zolang je de middelen goed kunt besteden en je structuur op orde hebt, kan 3 jaar een realistisch doel zijn. De motor dat zal wel goed komen. Daar kunnen ze gewoon lang genoeg mee bezig zijn vanaf nu. En met Sauber als partner staat er ook een geweldig team klaar dat met de juiste personele investeringen ook een topteam kan zijn.
  Dus er is geen reden om te twijfelen dat Audi niet mee zou kunnen doen om de podium plekken binnen 3 jaar. Immers blijft een eigen motor met eigen chassis een winnend concept. Sinds Brawn GP hebben we geen team meer gehad die wereldkampioen werd met een echte klassieke klantenmotor.

  Jaar 1 is de motor langzaam en gaat veel kapot.
  Jaar 2 is de motor betrouwbaar maar nog steeds langzaam
  Jaar 3 is de motor snel en betrouwbaar maar nog steeds geen winnaar.

Als het zo'n project wordt als WEC Le Mans is het reëel. Maar Toyota dacht er ook zo over en hebben de stekker er ook uit moeten trekken.
