Porpoising was zwaar voor Mercedes-motoren: "Verrassing om te zien"

Het team van Mercedes kende dit jaar een zeer teleurstellend seizoen in de Formule 1. De Duitse renstal kon in eerste instantie niet meevechten voor de zeges en bleef ver achter bij de concurrentie. Tevens kampte men met veel porpoising-problemen. Dit zorgde volgens Hywel Thomas voor flinke klappen op de motor.

Ondanks de flinke klappen die de krachtbronnen van Lewis Hamilton en George Russell te voortduren kregen, vielen de coureurs amper stil met motorproblemen. Sterker nog, over heel 2022 vielen de Mercedes-coureurs slechts twee keer uit. De statistiek maskeert echter het feit dat de porpoising-problematiek voor de nodige fysieke ongemakken en performance-achterstand zorgden.

In de Season Review op YouTube kijken de kopstukken van het team van Mercedes terug op het afgelopen jaar. Naast teambaas Toto Wolff schoof ook motoren-kopstuk Hywel Thomas aan. Hij besprak het effect van porpoising op de krachtbronnen: "Het was duidelijk dat de motoren flink op hun donder kregen. Het was best een verrassing om te zien hoe zwaar de klappen waren. We zagen wel hoe oncomfortabel George en Lewis waren toen ze uit hun auto's stapten. De motoren hadden het in dat opzicht eigenlijk net zo zwaar als de coureurs."
