Indy 500-winnaar Ericsson schittert in USA: "In F1 kreeg ik niet de kans"

Marcus Ericsson won in 2022 de iconische Indianapolis 500 en deed lang mee om het IndyCar-kampioenschap. Met weemoed denkt de Zweed terug aan vorig seizoen en hoopt het succes te kunnen herhalen in 2023.

Terugkijkend naar die bijzondere dag van 29 mei straalt de Chip Ganassi-coureur van oor tot oor. "Het is de grootste motorsportevenement in de wereld met de belangrijkste trofee. Ik ben trots dat ik op die beker sta en de winnaar ben", zei de Zweed tegenover Speed Sport.

In de koningsklasse viel het talent van Ericsson niet op en hij had hier en daar een uitschieter in de punten met zijn Alfa Romeo (voorheen Sauber). In de Verenigde Staten is het echter een ander verhaal. "Ik probeer al een tijdje te laten zien wat ik in mijn mars heb. In vijf seizoenen Formule 1 was het zwaar, omdat ik niet de kans kreeg om te laten zien wat ik kan door de type wagens die ik reed. Toen ik naar Amerika ging, behaalde ik succes."

Zoals gezegd won Ericsson op de Brickyard, maar deed - mede dankzij de dubbele punten en het wegvallen van concurrentie bij de Indy 500 - lang mee om het IndyCar-kampioenschap. "Ik was dichtbij bij het winnen van de titel. Ik leidde een tijdje de ranglijst, maar viel een beetje terug aan het einde van het seizoen. Daar ben ik wel teleurgesteld over." Ericsson werd uiteindelijk zesde in de stand en scoorde in de laatste vijf ontmoetingen maar twee top-tien-klasseringen, waarvan een zevende en negende positie.

Dream Big

Ericsson richt in het gesprek ook zijn vizier op de nabije toekomst. Voor 2023 heeft hij een ambitieuze wensenlijst. Te beginnen bij de Indianapolis 500. "Het wordt weer eens tijd dat iemand twee keer op rij wint en we maken een goede kans. Ik heb veel vertrouwen in het team. We zullen een sterke auto hebben."

De Zweed blijft echter wel realistisch: "Het blijft een moeilijke wedstrijd om te winnen", getuige zijn titanengevecht om de zege in de absolute slotfase. "Vanalles kan gebeuren, maar we gaan er alles aan doen om onze triomf te verdedigen. In 2023 hebben we een sterke rijderbezetting en dat voelt goed aan."

Maar niet alleen zegevieren tijdens The Greatest Spectale in Racing is prioriteit. "Ik heb grote doelen voor dit jaar. Proberen om het kampioenschap te winnen en [zoals gezegd] opnieuw de Indy 500. Het is een flinke uitdaging maar als je groot denkt, bereik je ook meer."

  Hij kreeg niet de kans omdat er een groep coureurs is die betere kwaliteiten hadden en dáárom werden verkozen boven hem.
  Niks meer of minder.
  Ik weet niet of men in de Indy series hem een kans wilden geven om zichzelf te bewijzen of niet, maar ze hebben iig wat verwarring gezaaid.
  Klaarblijkelijk niet in het minste bij Ericsson zelf.
  
  Tuurlijk zou hij met een Mercedes veel hoger zijn geëindigd, maar hij was overduidelijk niet in staat om mensen te overtuigen hem het stoeltje te geven, of zijn eigen team te inspireren om betere wagens te bouwen.
  
  Dat kan onze vriend zichzelf verwijten, en niemand anders.

  Boxboxbox...je zou dat kunnen zeggen maar dan spreek je jezelf tegen wanneer je zou zeggen dat F2 talenten wel goed genoeg zijn voor F1.
  
  Voorgaande f2 talenten als Illot of Lundgaard doen het prima, maar zijn (nog) geen match voor de Newgardens, Dixons, Powers en Ericssons gebleken.
  
  Ook Grosjean met zn 11 podia lukt het nog niet om te winnen.
  
  Indycar (net als Formule E) is een andere manier van racen en dus niet zo eenvoudig te vergelijken met F1 kwaliteit door een matige F1 coureur te kiezen die ineens (door hard werk) succes geniet in de andere klasse.

  De Indy 500 heeft niks met uitzonderlijke rijders kwaliteiten te maken,want het is gewoon een loterij.
  Marcus heeft gewoon mazzel gehad dat zijn team de beste keuzes maakte.
  Goed je moet je wagen wel uit de muur houden, maar verder blijft het nogmaals een loterij.
