Hamilton rouwt om overlijden Block: "Hij was een geweldig persoon"

De autosportwereld werd gisteren opgeschrikt door het nieuws van het overlijden van Ken Block. De Amerikaanse rallycoureur kwam om het leven bij een noodlottig sneeuwscooter-ongeval. Het nieuws sloeg in als een bom en veel coureurs reageerden verslagen. Lewis Hamilton eerde zijn vriend op Instagram.

Block was een zeer bekend gezicht in de autosportwereld. De Amerikaan werd zeer populair door zijn opvallende Gymkhana-video's en was daarna ook succesvol in de rallysport en in de rallycross. Ook was hij vaak aanwezig bij grote autosportevenementen en was hij zeer populair op YouTube. Block was zeker geen onbekende in de Formule 1-wereld en veel coureurs waren dan ook bevriend met de Amerikaan.

Geweldig persoon

Mercedes-coureur Lewis Hamilton kende Block goed en trok regelmatig op met de Amerikaan. Na het verdrietige nieuws pakte de Brit de pen op en schreef hij een emotionele Instagram post: "Vandaag heb ik het trieste nieuws ontvangen van het verlies van een goede vriend. Ik ben kapot van het nieuws van het overlijden van Ken Block. Hij was een geweldig persoon en hij leefde zijn leven op de beste manier."

Snowboarden

Hamilton ontmoette Block regelmatig en ze figureerde in meerdere promotievideo's. De Britse zevenvoudig wereldkampioen deelt dan ook mooie herinneringen aan Block: "Ik kan onze eerste samenwerking nog wel voor de geest halen, ik weet nog hoe positief hij was. Hij had zoveel talent achter het stuur. We hadden jaren geleden een geweldige tijd toen we gingen heli-skiën en snowboarden in Canada. We hadden veel respect voor elkaar. Hij zal worden gemist en ik ben met mijn gedachten en gebeden bij zijn familie."
