Steiner overwoog contractverlenging Schumacher: "Daarom duurde het zolang"

Het team van Haas besloot eind vorig jaar afscheid te nemen van Mick Schumacher. De jonge Duitse coureur wordt dit seizoen vervangen door zijn ervaren landgenoot Nico Hülkenberg. Haas heeft alle opties overwogen en teambaas Günther Steiner laat dat ook weten dat een nieuw contract voor Schumacher ook een mogelijkheid was.

Schumacher kende vorig jaar geen sterk seizoen in de Formule 1. De Duitse coureur reed veel schade en crashte in onder meer Saoedi-Arabië, Japan en Monaco. De kritiek was dan ook niet mals en de Duitser moest vechten voor zijn plekje. Haas besloot zijn contract niet te verlengen en Schumacher vond vervolgens onderdak bij het team van Mercedes. Bij Mercedes wordt Schumacher de derde coureur.

Haas-teambaas Günther Steiner zag dat Schumacher langzamerhand begon te groeien in de loop van het seizoen. De Italiaan heeft serieus nagedacht over een nieuw contract voor Schumacher. Steiner wordt geciteerd door Motorsportweek: "Absoluut. Mick heeft zich dit seizoen zeker verbeterd, dat hoef ik je niet te vertellen. Daarom duurde de beslissing over het stoeltje ook zo lang. We hebben deze beslissing niet voor de zomer genomen. Het duurde lang om te beslissen wat het beste is voor het team. Hij heeft een paar goede races gereden."

    Enige juiste beslissing. Hij geeft Schumacher wat credits na voor zijn vervolg carrière, echter die zal bij MB stoppen. 2 jaartjes reserve en dan via de achterdeur naar huis.

      Of het een echte investering is - durf ik niet te zeggen. Schumacher was in eerste instantie aangetrokken om juist een financiële toevoeging te geven aan Haas.
      Haas had toen van Gene een groen licht gekregen om naar betalende coureurs op zoek te gaan. Het kan zo zijn dat de schadekosten ineens hoger werden dan de (sponsor-)opbrengsten en dan is een rekensommetje snel gemaakt. Wellicht als Hij ultrasnel was dan zouden die schadekosten 'vergeven' kunnen worden maar dat was helaas niet het geval.

      nav DTS van twee jaar terug denk ik eerlijk gezegd dat ze bij Haas verwacht hadden dat ze na het contracteren van Schumacher het ene na het andere Duits sponsorcontract konden binnen hengelen. Ik denk dat dat achteraf wel tegenviel.

      Ik vermoed dat ze met het aantrekken van hulkenberg hopen op een vebetering van de auto en vanuit daar willen bouwen. Hulk staat bekent om zn kennis en als je van de Haas een middenmoot auto kan maken boor je ook een ander potentieel aan

    Ik had Mick best nog een jaar gegund, puur om te zien of er progressie in zat. Maar Hulkenberg gun ik heb ook weer, maar het is de vraag hoe hij het gaat doen. Voor de auto ontwikkeling lijkt mij Hulkenberg wel een goede kandidaat, dus het is afwachten wat het Haas gaat brengen.
