Cadillac maakt zich niet druk over negatieve reacties over F1-plannen

De Formule 1-wereld werd vorig week opgeschud door een aankondiging van Andretti en Cadillac. De twee Amerikaanse grootmachten willen samen de Formule 1 betreden met een nieuw team. De reacties op het nieuws waren niet bijster enthousiast maar bij Cadillac maakt men zich daar geen zorgen over.

De interesse van Andretti in de Formule 1 was al geruime tijd bekend. De gezamenlijk aankondiging met Cadillac, een merk van General Motors, kwam voor velen als een verrassing. De reacties van de huidige renstallen waren niet bijster positief maar FIA-president Mohammed Ben Sulayem was dat wel. Een veel gehoord punt van kritiek is dat Cadillac mogelijk zelf geen krachtbronnen gaat bouwen en slechts zijn naam leent aan de Power Unit.

Zin

Over krachtbron-plannen is nog niet veel bekend, maar bij Cadillac maakt men zich helemaal geen zorgen. De Amerikanen hebben er zin in en vicepresident Rory Harvey maakt dat duidelijk tegenover Motorsport.com: "Ik weet dat Andretti er ook nog zin in heeft. We gaan ons best doen als het gaat om onze uiting van interesse in de sport. We willen graag laten zien wat we kunnen brengen in de Formule 1."

Niveau

Harvey maakt zich dan ook allesbehalve druk over de verhalen en onduidelijkheden over de plannen met de krachtbronnen van het mogelijke team. De vicepresident is daar ook helder over: "De samenwerking waar we het afgelopen week over hebben gehad, geeft ons de kans om op het hoogte niveau te kunnen presteren. We geloven erin dat we een mix van kwaliteiten hebben in beide organisaties om samen een pakket te bouwen dat succesvol kan zijn."

Recentelijk wordt de term 'sportswashing' vaker aangekaart in de sportwereld.
De betekenis? Autoritaire overheden maken misbruik van bepaalde sportevenementen door ze naar hun land toe te trekken en zo hun slechte reputatie te verbergen of op te poetsen.
Ook de Formule 1 blijkt volgens deskundigen te 'sportswashen'.
Het lijkt erop dat F1 met name het geld nodig heeft dat races in het Midden-Oosten (denk aan Qatar, Bahrein en Saoedi-Arabië) kunnen opleveren.
De F1 heeft niet zoveel oog voor politieke en sociale overwegingen.

Dat, en de recente berichten over de eventuele komst van Saoudische F1 teams en de huidige veelvoud aan 'zandbak races' doet vermoeden dat de F1 vooral bezig is met zoveel mogelijk graaien waarbij wordt voorbij gegaan aan de politieke en humanitaire situaties in de betrokken landen.

  Laten we eerlijk zijn: heeft de F1 ooit rekening met humanitaire omstandigheden rekening gehouden?
  
  Doet de FIFA dat, de ATP/WTA? Of welk groot sportorgaan dan ook? Was leuk hoor... van de KNVB om die OneLove band te gaan dragen. Oh wacht... nee... dreiging van gele kaart: dan toch maar niet.
  
  Feit is dat het gewoon om de knaken gaat. Overal hetzelfde!
