Britse Grand Prix wil doorgroeien naar vierdaags raceweekend

De Britse Grand Prix op het circuit van Silverstone was afgelopen seizoen zeer populair. Het raceweekend kende een recordaantal bezoekers en de Grand Prix was tevens een enorm spektakelstuk. De organisatie van de Grand Prix wil dan ook voortborduren op het succes en het weekend uitbreiden.

De Formule 1 is in de afgelopen jaren steeds populairder geworden. Die groeiende populariteit is ook te merken op de circuits, de tribunes zitten bij elke race propvol. Ook op het iconische circuit van Silverstone zaten de tribunes vol en kwamen er over het gehele weekend zo'n 400.000 fans naar het circuit. De succesvolle editie smaakt naar meer en dat benadrukt de organisatie van de Grand Prix dan ook.

Donderdag

De organisatie van de Britse Grand Prix wil de structuur van het weekend aanpassen en verlengen naar vier dagen. Silverstone-directeur Stuart Pringle deelde zijn plannen op de Autosport International-beurs: "We kijken naar de mogelijkheid om het weekend te verlengen. Ik ben hard aan het werk voor de Formule 1. Ik vind dat ze het format moeten veranderen. Ze kunnen wel zeggen dat ze op donderdag de systemen testen maar dat doen ze dan maar een dag eerder. Laten we op donderdag al wat dingen organiseren. Er zijn genoeg mensen die dan al willen komen."

Festival

Wat Pringle op de donderdag precies wil organiseren, maakt hij niet duidelijk. Wel wil de Brit het weekend omtoveren in een soort festival omtrent de Grand Prix. Pringle ging op de beurs verder met zijn uiteenzetting: "Drie dagen is simpelweg niet genoeg. Laten we er een groot festival van gaan maken dat een groot deel van de week in beslag neemt. Het is nu al zo dat mensen op de dinsdag aankomen bij het circuit en hun tentje opzetten."

Dan zou Lewis ook in een andere klasse moeten gaan racen @NyckVrieskast, want de F1 blijft volgens het plan in het weekend op vrijdag, zaterdag en zondag rijden...

Die engelsen slaan wel door. Dit is alleen nog een extra mogelijkheid zodat hamilton meer kans maakt om iets te winnen.

  De Grand Prix van Groot-Brittannië draaide vorig jaar uit op een groot succes. Het raceweekend trok met 400.000 toeschouwers een recordaantal bezoekers.
  De organisatie is nu aan het kijken of zij de fans nog meer baanactie kan voorschotelen door het programma uit te breiden naar vier dagen.
  De Formule 1 zou dan nog steeds op vrijdag, zaterdag en zondag rijden, maar enkele supportklassen zouden dan op donderdag al beginnen met trainen en kwalificeren.
  Daarmee zou Silverstone het voorbeeld van de Australische Grand Prix volgen. In Melbourne werken kampioenschappen als de Supercars, Porsche Carrera Cup en S5000 op donderdag al hun eerste oefensessies af.
