'Piastri was relaxed' tijdens Alpine-McLaren gevecht – Webber

Oscar Piastri was één van de hoofdrolspelers in het silly season verhaal van 2022. De Australiër, toentertijd nog een Alpine-junior, werd door de Franse renstal publiekelijk aangekondigd als de vervanger van de verlatende Fernando Alonso. Echter bleek dat Piastri achter de schermen de keuze maakte om zijn Formule 1-debuut voor het team van McLaren te maken. Zijn manager en tevens oud F1-coureur Mark Webber merkt op zijn client tijdens de omstandigheden opmerkelijk kalm bleef.

Oscar Piastri zal dit jaar zijn Formule 1-debuut gaan maken. De Formule 2-kampioen van 2021 wist tijdens het silly-season soapverhaal een contract bij het Formule 1-team van McLaren te tekenen. Hiermee zal de 21-jarige coureur landgenoot Daniel Ricciardo vervangen, die op zijn beurt terugkeert naar zijn oude F1-liefde: Red Bull.

Mark Webber, de manager van Oscar Piastri en tevens een voormalig Red Bull F1-coureur, vertelt hoe de transfer zich daadwerkelijk ontwikkelde. "Hij was eigenlijk heel relaxed", begint Webber tijdens de KTM Summer Grill. "Ironisch genoeg was hij degene die het meest loyaal was. Alle mensen om hem heen waren namelijk veel minder geduldig."

Ook vertelt Webber hoe McLaren uiteindelijk gekozen heeft voor iemand zoals Piastri. "Oscar was beschikbaar (voor McLaren), en daar moesten we snel op schakelen. Ze (McLaren) waren bereid om een groot risico te nemen, net zoals ze bij Norris en een beetje met Sainz hebben gedaan. Ze wilden Piastri graag hebben, en dat heeft een groot verschil gemaakt. Het was van belang om vanaf het begin al gewild (door Mclaren) te voelen, en dat er meteen openheid van zaken werd getoond over de toekomstplannen."

Blijf het een bizarre situatie vinden - een rookie als 3de piloot die wordt afgesnoept nog voor hij een meter heeft gereden en niet door een team achteraan het veld. Ik kan me geen precedent herinneren, iemand?
MSC en De Vries hadden hun kunnen al laten zien in F1 en waren daarna echt loslopend wild. Dit is anders.

Dat hij er rustig onder bleef vind ik in tegenstelling tot Webber logisch. Uiteindelijk had hij de beslissing genomen en wist wat er zou volgen. Webber zal hem gevraagd hebben om te zwijgen en zoveel mogelijk ervaring op te doen bij Alpine. Achteraf was het misschien beter geweest om net na de eind datum wanneer de beslissing van Alpine moest vallen, hen te melden dat hij elders had getekend. Als team na hem race piloot te hebben benoemd via de media en een twitterbericht dit moeten aanhoren was vernederend. Eigenlijk ging het om een dubbele fout van Szafnauer die net Alonso verloor aan AM voor een 2jarig contract om daarna wereldkundig te maken via de media dat Piastri voor hen zou rijden zonder hem eerst te contacteren. Het plaatste Alpine in een kwalijk daglicht terwijl concurrent McLaren lachtte in het vuistje Ook van Webber was het een fout in communicatie, zeker qua timing Piastri had het gevolg al meerdere malen afgespeeld bij het ondertekenen of de zwijgplicht en moest ermee leven intussen. Dat was bij McLaren Alpine en Webber om verschillende redenen wel anders Toen de alarmbellen gingen waren die natuurlijk wel nerveus....
