Agressieve Albon zoekende naar 'juiste balans' omtrent communicatie

Sinds 2022 staat Alexander Albon weer op de Formule 1-grid. Het team van Williams heeft de Thais-Britse coureur de kans gegeven om zijn talent in de koningsklasse te laten schijnen. Nu Albon inmiddels een (succesvol) debuutseizoen bij Williams achter de rug heeft, geeft de 26-jarige coureur toe dat hij nog op zoek naar de juiste balans is wat betreft zijn radiocommunicatie richting de pitmuur.

Albon tekende vooraf aan het 2022-seizoen van de Formule 1 een contract met het team van Williams. Het betekende dat de coureur zijn terugkomst naar de koningsklasse inmiddels had beklonken, maar dat hij genoegen moest nemen om voor hekkensluiter Williams te gaan racen. Het verschil tussen Williams, een team dat al jarenlang moeite heeft om de boel op orde te houden en Red Bull, een goed geoliede machine, zorgde ervoor dat Albon in 2022 niet altijd op de juiste manier naar zijn team communiceerde.

Albon meent dat het ‘lastig’ is om de juiste balans in communicatie te vinden en geeft toe dat hij bij de start van 2022 soms op een iets te 'agressieve' wijze een boodschap richting zijn team uitte. "Wanneer er iets niet aan de haak is, dan spreek ik mij uit. Aan de andere kant, vind ik het niet nodig om mijn mening te uiten over iets wat buiten onze controle om gebeurt. Alles moet op een juiste en constructieve manier gaan."

Volgens de Thais-Britse topsporter moet hij nog steeds wennen aan het verschil in cultuur tussen zijn oude werkgever Red Bull en Williams, waar hij momenteel voor uitkomt. "Er is een klein verschil tussen Red Bull en Williams wat betreft de mentaliteit. De cultuur verschilt ook een klein beetje. Dat ben ik nog aan het uitpluizen. Ik wil natuurlijk op de meest constructieve manier mogelijk naar mijn team communiceren. Ik ben nog bezig om die juiste balans daarin te vinden", meent Albon tegenover Autosport.

Albon had een gezonde honger om weer terug te keren naar de Formule 1, na een jaar lang langs de zijlijn te hebben moeten staan. Wanneer het duidelijk werd dat tijdens zijn comeback niet altijd alles op rolletjes verliep, communiceerde Albon soms op een 'agressieve' manier naar zijn team om zijn 'frustratie' te uiten over hoe bepaalde zaken beter konden worden geregeld. De voormalig Red Bull-coureur meent echter dat hij blijft leren om de juiste manier te vinden om zijn feedback aan het team te geven.

"Ik begon mij te realiseren dat (deze manier van communiceren) niet de beste manier was om het team te bereiken, dus moest ik andere manieren proberen te vinden. Ik praat nog veel (met het team) over hoe we dit kunnen bereiken. Zoals ik al eerder zei draait het om de cultuur en mentaliteit van het team te proberen te begrijpen, maar ook om iedereen in dezelfde richting te proberen te krijgen", sluit Albon af.
