Krachtbronexpert Alpine verklaart 2023 power-unitdoelstellingen

Het Formule 1-team van Alpine hoopt in 2023 een stap voorwaarts te maken, terwijl het tegelijkertijd concurrent McLaren opnieuw van een P4 finishplaats in het constructeurskampioenschap kan afhouden. De eindverantwoordelijke voor de ontwikkeling van de Alpine-krachtbron Bruno Famin detailleert de ontwikkelingsdoelstellingen voor 2023.

De Franse Renault krachtbron achterin de Alpine A522-bolide liep in 2022 ontzettend hard. Vooral op de rechte stukken was de Franse renstal bloedsnel. Echter liet de betrouwbaarheid als gevolg van de performancepush te wensen over; in totaal liet het team van Alpine afgelopen jaar maar liefst zeven uitvalbeurten bijschrijven. Vooral Fernando Alonso was de sjaak; de tweevoudig wereldkampioen was zes van de zeven keer genoodzaakt om de race vroegtijdig te staken.

De ontwikkelingsfilosofie van Alpine, namelijk om de grenzen van performance gedurende de eerste seizoenshelft van 2022 te blijven verleggen, betekende dat het team vervolgens tijdens de tweede helft van het seizoen flink aan de bak moest om vervolgens de betrouwbaarheid te verbeteren. Alpine’s hoofd van de krachtbron-ontwikkelingsafdeling Bruno Famin meent dat er voor 2023 geen stap terug gezet zal worden:

"Ik denk niet dat we ergens zullen terugvallen. We werken hard aan de details, vooral aan de kant van de ondersteunende onderdelen. Ook willen we onze validatieprocessen stimuleren. We proberen ze op de best mogelijke manier te verbeteren, beter dan in 2022. Het algemene doel voor 2023 is om hetzelfde prestatieniveau te behouden, terwijl we tegelijkertijd alles meer betrouwbaar proberen te maken", vertelt de Fransman.

Ook spreekt Famin over welke potentiële details zijn team op zal proberen te focussen, om toch, ondanks het tot 2026 geldende verbod om de motor in performance verder te ontwikkelen, nog wat sneller te kunnen worden.

"Volgens de regels kun je de prestaties niet zomaar verbeteren. Maar wat we wel kunnen doen is de prestaties van de auto verbeteren door bijvoorbeeld de inlaat- of uitlaatpijp te veranderen zodat we onze collega’s vanuit Enstone een betere aerodynamica kunnen geven. Ook werken we aan energiebeheer. Maar ook hier zullen we zeer beperkt zijn. We zullen slechts één softwarerelease per jaar hebben. Het gaat om vooruitgang, ook al is de winst heel klein. Het gaat niet zozeer om pure prestaties, maar meer om de rijeigenschappen en integratie/aerodynamica", vertelt Famin tegenover motorsport-total.
