Vitaly Petrov: "Spa cruciaal om nog iets van ons seizoen te maken"

Het team van Lotus Renault GP introduceert in België de nodige updates om de neergaande lijn te doorbreken. Na twee podiumplekken in de eerste twee races van 2011 is de Britse renstal ver weggezakt. Coureur Vitaly Petrov is hoopvol dat Spa-Francorchamps de start van een opleving is.

Ik hoop dat onze upgrades goed uitpakken en dan zien we wel waar we staan, maar ik ken Spa-Francorchamps goed, begint de Rus. Ik had hier vorig jaar een sterke wedstrijd. Het is een van de beste en meest uitdagende circuits die je als coureur tegen komt. De bochten zijn gevarieerd, het gaat op en neer, en het weer kan per bocht verschillen. Je weet nooit wat je kan verwachten op Spa, maar ik hoop dat we beter voorbereid en klaar zijn voor deze race. Dat is cruciaal om nog iets van ons seizoen te maken en ik heb vertrouwen dat we gaan slagen.

De eerste seizoenshelft is niet op het gehoopte succes uitgedraaid, toen we in Europa aankwamen zijn we duidelijk iets van onze snelheid verloren. Het team had tijd nodig om de oorzaak daarvoor te achterhalen en dat is volgens mij nu gelukt. We richten onze blik op de toekomst en op de races die we nog voor de boeg hebben. Het komt steeds meer aan op uithoudingsvermogen en hopelijk zijn wij als team daar het best op voorbereid.

Ik hoop het voor Renault, maar ik heb er een hard hoofd in! Net als Mercedes GP verwacht ik dat ze geen grote stappen meer gaan maken.

  Ik hoop eerder de FI en Sauber rijders weer vooraan te zien. De gun-factor bij die teams ligt altijd enorm hoog (zeker bij mij).
