Ekström pakt vierde Race of Champions-titel na winst op Schumacher

Ook de 2023-editie van de Race of Champions heeft weer voor veel spektakel gezorgd. In het ijzige Pite Havsbad in Zweden was het DTM- en rallycoureur Mattias Ekström die er voor de vierde keer met de titel vandoor ging. De Zweedse coureur versloeg hiermee Formule 1-bekende Mick Schumacher in de finale en wist de winst voor de ogen van onder andere mededeelnemers David Coulthard, Mika Hakkinen, Sebastian Vettel en Valtteri Bottas te behalen.

De prestigieuze race werd ook dit jaar weer in het Zweedse Pite Havsbad georganiseerd. Naast de Nations Cup, die op de zaterdag werd gehouden en door Petter en Oliver Solberg namens team Noorwegen werd gewonnen, was de zondag het strijdtoneel voor het individuele Race of Champions-gevecht. Mattias Ekström vond zijn weg naar de finale door onder andere aan Johan Kristofferrson en Travis Pastrana voorbij te komen, terwijl Mick Schumacher Aston Martin-junior Felipe Drugovich en notabene vriend en mentor Sebastian Vettel wist te verslaan. In het heetst van de strijd – finalist Ekström was tijdens zijn slotstuk met Schumacher nog druk aan het multitasken om een brandje in zijn auto te doven – wist de Zweed uiteindelijk met een score van 2-0 zijn vierde Race of Champions-titel te behalen.

Zijn vierde titelwinst was extra speciaal, aangezien Ekstrom twee eerdere edities wist te winnen door Mick’s vader en zevenvoudig F1-wereldkampioen Michael Schumacher in 2007 en 2009 te verslaan. Na de podiumceremonie spreekt Ekström mooie woorden over zijn ervaringen met zowel Michael als Mick, ook vertelt de Zweedse coureur over zijn hete avonturen in de slotfase:

"Om Mick (Schumacher) in de finale te zien was heel speciaal. Dit (tegen Mick racen) is nog meer bijzonder dan winnen; Michael (Schumacher) was altijd een van de mensen in de sport geweest die ik het meest bewonder. Ik leerde hem eigenlijk pas bij de Race of Champions kennen. We hebben een aantal geweldige gevechten gehad waar ik alleen maar mooie herinneringen aan over heb gehouden. Net als Michael is Mick ook heel bescheiden. Mick is een groot talent en hij heeft de toekomst voor zich, dus ik kijk uit naar meer toekomstige gevechten."

"Mijn doel was om de volledige focus tot de finishvlag te behouden, maar na een halve ronde vloog er iets in brand. Mijn co-rijder wou stoppen maar daar zat ik niet op te wachten. Ik keek naar beneden maar hield m’n voet op het gaspedaal. Ik wist dat ik vuurbestendige handschoenen aan had, dus probeerde het vuur te doven nadat ik het gevonden had. Gelukkig kreeg ik het voor elkaar zonder al te veel tijd te verliezen", sluit Ekström af.

Heb gisteren de gehele editie live bekeken op tv, moet zeggen dat een zeer leuk evenement. Ik heb er van genoten.

Die Ekstrom deed het ook altijd goed in de DTM. Weet niet hoe oud hij inmiddels is, maar ik vind het vreemd dat hij nooit in verband is gebracht met de F1. Weet iemand hier meer over?

  44 ondertussen. Als ik even op Wikipedia kijk, heeft hij nooit F2 of F3 achtige klassen gedaan maar heeft vrij snel voor DTM gekozen. Misschien een sponsor ding of het zat er gewoon niet in.
  
  ROC is leuk om te volgen maar zeker op sneeuw heb je meer aan rally ervaring dan aan F1 ervaring denk ik. Al is de basis hetzelfde uiteraard.

  Ekstrom liet een kleine 20 jaar geleden al weten dat hij niet in de F1 wou rijden, zijn passie lag in Rally.

  :-) ROC is natuurlijk geen talent-show voor F1. Anders zouden er veel andere namen in F1 rondrijden tot nu toe.
