Steun voor bekritiseerde regelwijziging: "Het wordt bijna een speech bij de Oscars"

Autosportfederatie FIA kwam enkele weken geleden met een opvallende regelwijziging. Men heeft de regels aangepast waardoor het voor coureurs en teams nu verboden is om zonder toestemming onder andere politieke statements te maken. Niet iedereen is fan van het plan, David Coulthard is echter wel een voorstander van het plan.

De regelwijziging van de FIA komt na een aantal jaren waarin de coureurs zich steeds vaker uitspraken over politieke en maatschappelijke onderwerpen. Lewis Hamilton zorgde er bijvoorbeeld voor dat er in 2020 geknield werd voorafgaand de Grands Prix. De Brit vroeg verder aandacht voor de Black Lives Matter-beweging terwijl Sebastian Vettel aandacht vroeg voor het klimaatprobleem. De FIA wil hier nu dus een stokje voor steken.

Oscars

Teams en coureurs moeten voortaan toestemming vragen aan de FIA om een statement te maken. De meeste coureurs reageerden nog niet echt enthousiast maar oud-coureur David Coulthard begrijpt de regelwijziging. Bij het Zweedse Expressen spreekt hij zich uit: "Het wordt bijna een soort overwinningsspeech bij de Oscars. Als iedereen zijn kans grijpt om een politiek statement te maken, dan is er geen issue meer dat voor niemand belangrijk is."

Concentreren

Coulthard geeft echter wel aan dat het belangrijk is dat de coureurs mogen zeggen wat ze willen. De oud-coureur benadrukt verder wel dat het hier slechts gaat om een wijziging van het sportieve reglement: "We moeten of alles benoemen, of het is beter om gewoon niets te zeggen en ons te concentreren op de sport. Als atleet moet je heel erg gelukkig zijn dat je betaald krijgt voor iets wat anderen voor niets zouden doen."

Hoe vaak hoor je de coureurs nu werkelijk over hun persoonlijke projecten? Alleen als je ernaar zoekt zie je het, anders zo goed als niet. Dus dat het als de speech bij de Oscars is, is onzin. Overigens zijn die al jaren niet meer zo uitgebreid. Feitelijk is het ophalen en oprotten en hooguit een klein dankwoordje, maar alleen de ontvangers van de belangrijke Oscars krijgen de gelegenheid echt even wat te zeggen en het is zelden politiek.

Vettel is al gestopt, dus ze bedoelen eigenlijk alleen Lewis, als het helden waren zeiden ze dit gewoon alleen tegen hem, maar dat zat er uiteraard niet in.

Zou er niet van opkijken als de FIA met een tegenovergesteld (ongewenst) effect te kampen krijgt. Lewis die voorafgaand aan een GP in een 'fout' land voluit los gaat op zijn social media accounts en veel meer aandacht voor de universele rechten van de mens in de media...
