Video: Daytona-winnaar Allen hield adem in tijdens krankzinnige fotofinish

De 24 uur van Daytona was ook dit jaar weer gevuld met spektakel. Meerdere racecategorieën waren zeer spannend aangezien vele auto’s voor een groot deel van de race binnen enkele seconden van elkaar zaten. De LMP2-klasse stal uiteindelijk de show, want de finish van de 24-uursrace van Daytona werd in een fotofinish beslist door een onderling verschil van 16 duizendsten van een seconde. (0.016) Winnaar James Allen liet weten de laatste ronde met het mes tussen de tanden te hebben gereden.

De 26-jarige James Allen nam dit jaar deel aan de 24 uursrace van Daytona met team Proton Competition. De huidige IMSA-coureur bestuurde samen met Fred Poordad, Francesco Pizzi en Gianmaria Bruni de #55 Oreca Gibson 07-wagen die uiteindelijk de identieke wagen van Crowdstrike Racing by APR op de finishlijn wist te verslaan.

Na afloop van de legendarische langeafstandsrace reflecteert Allen op de beslissende slotfase: "Eerlijk gezegd dacht ik niet dat we een kans hadden”, begint de Australiër. Ik zat een tijdje achter de AF Corse-auto, terwijl ik kon zien dat de Crowstrike-auto afstand van ons nam. Toen ik er eenmaal aan voorbij was, zag ik dat het verschil best groot was. Langzaam maar zeker kon ik het gat verkleinen en in de één-na-laatste ronde kon ik al zien dat ik ter hoogte van de start/finishlijn ik een goed momentum op hem had."

"Ter hoogte van de start/finishlijn zat ik er al voor, dus ik nam mezelf voor om geen grote risico’s te nemen. Met de snelheid op de rechte stukken kon ik mijn kans alsnog pakken. Bij het uitkomen van de bus-stop chicane dacht ik ‘heb ik dit goed gedaan? Was mijn exit goed genoeg? Gelukkig voor mij wel, want ik pakte hem nét voor de finishlijn. Volgens mij had ik sinds bocht 4 mijn adem ingehouden. Het was een krankzinnig moment, zoiets zal denk ik maar één keer voorkomen. Om de race op deze manier te kunnen winnen voelde geweldig", sluit Allen af.
