Waarom FRECA de ideale klasse is voor jonge coureurs

F4, F3 en F2 zijn het meest bekend in de opstapladder naar het walhalla in de autosport: de Formule 1. Toch bestaat er nog een feeder series sinds 2019 om racetalent klaar te stomen voor het grote werk: Formula Regional European Championship by Alpine.

FRECA is de opvolger van de Formule Renault 2.0 Eurocup. Op dit moment is de Midden-Oosten-variant van FRECA aan de gang, de FRMEC. Tweevoudig F4-kampioen en Mercedes-protogé Andrea Kimi Antonelli leidt de dans van 36 deelnemers met onder andere F3-rijders en oud-FRECA-kampioenen. De Italiaan is een debutant in dit soort type wagens en zijn prestaties lijken vanzelfsprekend met de dominante titels in de Duitse en Italiaanse Formule 4. Waarom toch niet direct de doorstroom naar Formule 3?

Dat heeft een aantal redenen: de FRECA-bolide is veel moeilijker te besturen dan die in F3 zeggen verschillende coureurs. Veel wielspin bij het uitkomen van de bochten is een van de uitdagingen waar de F1-coureurs mee om moeten gaan. Daarnaast is inhalen veel lastiger met deze auto's, waardoor kwalificatie en bandenmanagement cruciale rollen spelen in het resultaat. Ook kunnen de rijders gebruik maken van push to pass waarmee ook een tactisch aspect tijdens het racen om de hoek komt kijken. Hiermee sluit FRECA beter aan op de F2 en F1 volgens insiders.

Antonelli had best na zijn F4-titels de stap kunnen maken naar F3, maar voor zijn ontwikkeling besloot Mercedes hem te stallen in FRECA om veel ervaring op te doen met veel nieuwe belangrijke aspecten om een succesvol coureur te worden. Dat de 16-jarige Italiaan het kampioenschap van het Midden-Oosten meteen naar zijn hand zet, is uitzonderlijk in deze lastige klasse. Wat goed is, komt snel, maar een extra jaartje verder ontwikkelen in de FRECA kan absoluut geen kwaad voor de overstap naar de Formule 3.

Wat is FRECA precies?

FRECA staat voor Formula Regional European Championship by Alpine. Het is de officiële vierde tree van de Road to F1-ladder, die zich perfect positioneert na de F4 en vóór de F3. Door ACI Sport Formula Regional en Formula Renault Eurocup te combineren, was het idee om een competitief kampioenschap te creëren voor jonge talenten uit de nationale F4-categorieën over de hele wereld, zoals de Duitse, Italiaanse of Braziliaanse.

Auto's die zijn ontworpen volgens de F3-veiligheidsnormen, is het Formula Regional European Championship by Alpine een stap voorwaarts van de F4.Alle coureurs strijden met identieke door Tatuus gebouwde Formule Regional-auto's die worden aangedreven door een Renault Oreca met turbocompressor van 270 pk.

FRMEC

De eennalaatste ronde van het alternatieve kampioenschap in het Midden-Oosten is op 11 en 12 februari. De slotraces zijn op 18 en 19 februari.

Help me even.
De FIA heeft toch juist afstand gedaan van alle bestaande Junior klasses om middels de huidige opstapklasses de "enige" weg naar de F1 te plaveien?
Mede dankzij punten te vergeven om een uiteindelijke superlicentie te kunnen verkrijgen.
Waarom zou de klasse die Martijn hier benoemd dan ineens de meest aantrekkelijke instapklasse moeten zijn?
Het is juist de voorloper (Renault 3.5) die de FIA de deur heeft verwezen.
Deze FREA is toch gewoon dezelfde klasse met een nieuwe naam?

  @ evert. in de Freca wordt met Renault Eurocup specificaties gereden, dus de Renault 2 liter motor. deze specs sluiten aan op de F3
  
  de World Series by Renault had 3.5 liter v8 zytek motoren en aerospecs te vergelijken met de gp2. Renault plakte er wel een merksticker maar Gibson engineering deed motor onderhoud nadat ze Zytek hadden overgenomen. De WSR was de helft goedkoper dan de GP2 en vele rijders die geen suikerooms maar wel talent kwamen daar terecht. dat was de FIA inderdaad een doorn in het oog en men wilde met een goedkopere F2 en meer Slc punten de WSR dan ook buitenspel zetten.
  
  dat laatste lukt helaas, maar de goedkope opzet van de F2 kon niet gerealiseerd worden. noodgreep was om de veel duurdere Gp2 dan maar de F2 te maken. hetzelfde liedje gaat nu weer draaien omdat de stoelen in de F3 ook veel duurder zijn geworden, en mensen dus naar de Eurocup opvolger uitwijken

  Je weet het inderdaad heel goed uit te leggen.
  (in ieder geval 100000% beter dan mij)
  Maar daarmee begrijp ik nog steeds de opmerking (en titel van dit item) niet.
  Hoezo zou dit nu dan de ideale klasse moeten zijn?
  Voor mij klinkt het een beetje als "Mocht je ooit F1 coureur willen worden dan kan je het beste beginnen met grasmaaier racen".

  reden die genoemd wordt is dat de Freca auto je beter voor bereid op grillige F1 auto s terwijl de F3 te makkelijk zou zijn. die zie ik niet helemaal idd. wat ik me wel kan voorstellen is dat topstoeltjes in de F3 niet voor onder het miljoen weggaan. bij de Freca is het iets goedkoper. maar ja dat wordt idd niet benoemd ;)
