Brundle reageert op Horner: "Nogal een opmerkelijke opmerking"

Red Bull Racing-teambaas leeft met veel zelfvertrouwen toe naar de start van het aankomende Formule 1-seizoen. De Britse teambaas heeft veel vertrouwen in zijn coureurs Max Verstappen en Sergio Perez, hij ziet dit zelfs als de beste line-up ooit. Martin Brundle plaatst daar dan weer vraagtekens bij.

Verstappen en Perez staan aan de vooravond van hun derde gezamenlijke seizoen bij het team van Red Bull. De twee bezorgden Red Bull vorig seizoen de constructeurstitel en Verstappen werd in de afgelopen twee seizoenen wereldkampioen in de koningsklasse van de autosport. Verstappen zal op jacht gaan naar zijn derde wereldtitel en Perez zal tevens gaan jagen op succes.

Opmerkelijk

Voormalig Formule 1-coureur en huidig Sky Sports-commentator Martin Brundle heeft de situatie bekeken, maar hij snapt de uitspraken van Horner niet. De Britse commentator spreekt zich bij zijn werkgever Sky Sports uit: "Bedoelt hij dat ze als rijdersduo beter met elkaar matchen? Is hij van mening dat Checo iets gewilliger is dan bijvoorbeeld met Vettel en Webber in het nabije verleden? Als je het mij vraagt is het een nogal opmerkelijke opmerking."

Aardige dingen

Brundle loopt al flink wat jaren mee in het wereldje en hij weet dan ook waar teambazen dit soort uitspraken op kunnen baseren. De Britse oud-coureur doet dan ook een gok over de herkomst van de woorden van Horner: "Hij beschikt over alle beschikbare data en hij is de baas. Als dit bovendien de coureurs zijn waarmee je het seizoen gaat starten, waarom zou je dan inderdaad geen aardige dingen zeggen over ze?"

Volgens mij bedoelt Brundle juist dat Horner iets aardigs over zijn coureurs zegt. Hetgeen de titel boven dit artikel volledig misplaatst zou maken.

Heb het nou 3 x gelezen, maar ik vraag me af wat Horner nog aan aardigs kan toevoegen om nog aardiger te zijn voor z'n rijders duo? Ik zou het niet kunnen bedenken. Dat ze ook nog lief zijn? Geen idee.

Zolang Horner zo lyrisch blijft doen over zijn niet-Engelse wereldkampioen, zullen ze bij het Engelse Sky kritisch blijven doen over alles wat ze bij de RBR leiding zeggen over de rest van de F1 paddock.
Brundle is overigens één van de meest objectieve en geïnformeerde verslaggevers in de sport. Dat blijft bestaan. Ik kan me iig meer ergeren aan het Nederlandse journaille die maar hetzelfde riedeltje blijven uitmelken, blijkbaar niet gehinderd door enige kennis van zaken. Dat Sky het zo met Hamilton heeft is hun nationaliteit... maar ze hebben iig wel wat meer autosport in hun bloed stromen.

Christian Horner has claimed Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez are Red Bull's "best" pairing

"We're very lucky we've got two fantastic drivers and you know their combined efforts the last two years have been stunning," Horner said at the launch of Red Bull's new car for the upcoming 2023 season.

"That first drivers' world championship for Max in '21 and then the double championship last year and winning 17 Grands Prix between the two of them. First and third in the drivers' championship and, of course, bringing home that constructors' championship back to Oracle Red Bull Racing for the first time in eight years.

"And, you know, these guys, I think it's the best pairing we've ever had in Formula 1. It's been hugely successful.

"We're going to need every bit of that this year as we go against some big opponents, with the other teams looking to come back at us after such a dominant season last year, but we're very fortunate to have to two such talented drivers."

However, Brundle has questioned Horner's assertion they are Red Bull's "best" pairing ever, suggesting it is because Perez is "more compliant" than Vettel or Webber. Speaking on Sk y Spo rts F1, he said: "What does Christian mean when he says 'best'?

Martin Brundle believes Horner's comments are "odd"

"Does he mean they fit together well as a combo? In other words, that Sergio is probably a little bit more compliant than perhaps Mark Webber or Sebastian Vettel would have been.

"So, odd in that respect, but Christian's got the data and that's what he thinks, and he's the boss. But if they're the two you've got going into the season ahead, why not say nice things about them?"
