VeeKay-teamgenoot Daly maakt zijstap naar NASCAR en mikt op Daytona 500

Een bijzondere manoeuvre van Conor Daly: de IndyCar-teamgenoot van Rinus 'VeeKay' van Kalmthout waagt zich binnenkort aan een sprong in de Amerikaanse NASCAR-serie. Daly probeert zich namelijk te kwalificeren voor de legendarische Daytona 500, de wedstrijd waarmee het stock car-seizoen traditiegetrouw wordt afgetrapt.

Dat Daly zijn pijlen op een NASCAR-optreden had gericht was in de wandelgangen al een tijdje bekend, maar met dank aan zijn vaste Ed Carpenter Racing-sponsor BitNile wordt de droom nu ook daadwerkelijk omgezet in realiteit. De cryptoboer slaat zijn handen ineen met het Money Team Racing, de renstal die gerund wordt door de veelgeprezen profbokser Floyd Mayweather. Daly mag zodoende de #50 bolide van het team besturen.

Aangezien Money Team Racing niet beschikt over een zogenaamde 'charter', een vrijbrief voor deelname aan het hoofdprogramma, zal Daly zich middels een kwalificatietraining moeten plaatsen voor de Amerikaanse raceklassieker. Veel zorgen maakt de Amerikaan met Ierse roots - voormalig Formule 1-coureur Derek Daly is zijn vader - zich overigens niet. "Ik ben dolblij dat ik de kans krijg om me te plaatsen voor de Daytona 500. Ik zie er naar uit om achter het stuur te kruipen van wat voor machine BitNile.com me ook aanbiedt, of dat nu een racewagen, een boot of een strandbuggy is."

Daly’s queeste naar NASCAR-succes begint volgende week woensdag, wanneer de kwalificatie op het programma staat. Mocht Daly daarin tekort komen, dan mag hij een dag later op herkansing bij de Bluegreen Vacations Duel race. De Daytona 500 staat gepland voor zondag 19 februari aanstaande.

Na zijn NASCAR-avontuur stort Daly zich weer op zijn werkzaamheden bij Ed Carpenter Racing in de IndyCar Series. Aankomend seizoen bestuurt hij voor het vierde opeenvolgende jaar de #20 wagen en ook in 2023 krijgt de Amerikaan de kans om een voltijdprogramma af te werken.

Zijn pa was geen hoogvliegert in F1 maar zoon Conor laat erg weinig zien in de Indycar. Ik ben benieuwd wat hij dan met een Nascar auto kan.

  Conor is denk ik nog zeker van 2 jaartjes bij ECR (2023 en 2024) de opvolger is al wel getekend in Josh Pierson. Volgens mij de jongste deelnemer van Le Mans dit jaar, schijnt al getekend te hebben bij ECR voor 2025. Rinus heeft vorig jaar voor drie jaar getekend dus zit nog tot en met 2025 bij ECR en ik zie ECR geen fulltime 3de auto inzetten
