Gasly in zijn nopjes met Alpine: ''Het beste gevoel waarmee ik ooit aan een seizoen ben begonnen''

Pierre Gasly zijn eerste meters bij zijn nieuwe werkgever Alpine, is de Fransman uitermate goed bevallen. De eenmalig Grand Prix-winnaar is onder de indruk van het team en de bolide, maar moet volgens hem nog wel dingetjes bijschijven om de A523 zijn ware potentieel volledig te benutten.

"Het is het beste gevoel waarmee ik ooit aan een seizoen begonnen ben, dat is zeker", zei hij in antwoord op een vraag van RaceFans in Bahrein. "Ik was zeer enthousiast om in de auto te springen en vanaf het eerste gevoel was ik behoorlijk blij en behoorlijk tevreden.''

"We hebben het grootste deel van ons programma doorlopen. De auto reageert goed. Het is duidelijk dat ik veel nieuwe parameters en nieuwe dingen moet leren door de teamwissel en de nieuwe ingenieurs, de nieuwe auto, de nieuwe omgeving.''

"Dus alles is nieuw en ik moet wennen aan die nieuwe omgeving. Maar tot nu toe ben ik erg blij met hoe het team me heeft ontvangen en hoe de hele voorbereiding tijdens de winter is verlopen in de aanloop naar dit nieuwe seizoen."

A523

Gasly durft nog geen uitspraken te doen over waar Alpine nu staat in de rangorde, maar ziet al na de eerste testdag positieve veranderingen. "Het is nog vrij vroeg om te vergelijken, want het zijn natuurlijk verschillende circuits. Vanmorgen hebben we niet echt gekeken naar de prestaties, maar vooral naar duurzame ronden en proberen een beeld te krijgen van het grote geheel van de auto, hoe hij werkt en hoe hij functioneert en richtingen en gebieden te ontdekken, zwakke punten om aan te werken."

"De wagen reageert goed op wat we veranderd hebben in de wagen. Het is altijd een goed teken dat de auto goed in elkaar zit. Dus heel wat positieve signalen. Maar een idee te hebben waar we staan ten opzichte van vorig jaar, meer prestaties, hoeveel et cetera, op dit moment heb ik geen idee."

Logischerwijs kwam de vraag voorbij hoe anders de AlphaTauri-bolide in vergelijking met de Alpine. Gasly zei hierop: "Ik ben al vijf jaar gewend om hetzelfde te besturen en telkens als ze roepen om een 'fail' of wat dan ook, wil je onbewust iets doen wat net iets anders is. Maar tot nu toe heb ik nul fouten gemaakt en daar ben ik best tevreden mee. Uiteraard is het iets dat vanzelf komt, het wordt vanzelfsprekender als je meer tijd in de auto doorbrengt."

De Fransman geeft zichzelf dan ook de tijd en legt niet te veel druk op zichzelf. "Maar mezelf kennende, weet ik dat ik hard zal pushen en dicht bij de limiet zal zitten.Ik heb nu al het gevoel dat ik de auto vrij snel onder de knie heb. Het duurt nog wel een paar weekenden voordat alles automatisch gaat."

Werkomgeving

Gasly bivakkeerde lange tijd bij de Red Bull-familie en komt nu terecht in een andere werkomgeving. Tot op heden geen teleurstelling. "Ik moet zeggen dat ik erg onder de indruk ben van het team qua infrastructuur, faciliteiten, personeel, de technische staf, veel mensen met ervaring in het team. Het laat gewoon zien hoeveel potentieel er is.''

Alpine werd vierde achter Red Bull, Ferrari en Mercedes en Gasly ziet dat er meer in het vat zit voor 2023. "Voor mij is het geen verrassing waarom ze vorig jaar een heel goed seizoen hadden, zelfs gezien de DNF's en de punten die ze verloren. Het geeft me zeker hoop dat er potentieel is om nog meer te doen en dichter bij de top drie te komen.''

"De werkrelatie, moet ik zeggen, ik voel me erg op mijn gemak. Het team heeft ook begrepen welke ruimte en vrijheid ik nodig heb om echt mijn maximale potentieel te kunnen benutten. Daarom voel ik me goed en heb ik het gevoel dat ik vanaf het begin sterke prestaties kan leveren of wat het team van me verwacht. Tot nu toe ben ik zeer tevreden'', sloot Gasly af.

Als ze de problemen van vorig jaar die de DNF's veroorzaakten opgelost hebben kan het idd een leuk seizoen worden voor Alpine, we wachten af.

  Ik denk dat ze in de basis een goede auto hebben en de betrouwbaarheid hem roet in het eten kan gooien. Laten we hopen dat de betrouwbaarheid tot het verleden hoort.
