Domenicali verdedigt Saudi-Arabië: F1 kan voor 'stille revolutie' zorgen

Volgens Formule 1-topman Stefano Domenicali kan de sport voor veel goeds in Saudi-Arabië zorgen. De CEO van de koningsklasse verdedigt de ontwikkeling dat de sport steeds nauwere banden met het Midden-Oosterse land krijgt, waar sinds 2021 een Grand Prix wordt georganiseerd.

Ook in 2023 zal het Formule 1-circus richting Saudi-Arabië afreizen voor een Grand Prix in de hogesnelheidsbaan Jeddah Corniche Circuit. De race heeft tot nu toe voor veel spektakel op de baan gezorgd, maar toch blijven de kritische stemmen rondom de samenwerking tussen de Formule 1 en het land groeien.

Vorig jaar nog besloten de Formule 1-coureurs om de race te boycotten, nadat een aantal kilometer verderop een raketaanval de nabije stad Jeddah aanviel. De coureurs werd toentertijd door F1-CEO Stefano Domenicali hun veiligheid gegarandeerd, waardoor de race uiteindelijk wel volgens planning doorging.

Toch bleef het kritische geluid in volume groeien. Eerder deze week werd Lord Scriven, het hoofd van de Britse parlementaire groep in zijn kritische woorden over de mensenrechten in de Golf geciteerd: "Het is teleurstellend dat de huidige top van zowel de FIA als de Formule 1 lijken te denken dat geld veel belangrijker is dan het verlenen van mensenrechten in de landen waar zij zoveel geld verdienen."

De druk op Domenicali’s schouders lijkt wat betreft deze rel alsmaar te groeien. Toch blijft de Italiaanse topman standvastig dat de sport positieve veranderingen in het land teweeg kan brengen:

"Revoluties gebeuren altijd op de achtergrond. Het gaat erom dat de mensen, culturen en mindset veranderen. Om simpelweg een titel in de krant te plaatsen zonder vervolgens tot actie over te gaan zal niks brengen. Ik heb de voorkeur om, buiten het nieuws om, jaar in jaar uit te blijven praten om te kijken wat er nodig is. Tuurlijk moet je bewijzen hebben dat wat je wil veranderen ook daadwerkelijk gebeurt. Ik kies ervoor om een minder agressieve methode te nemen, om ervoor te zorgen dat de rivier uiteindelijk alsnog vloeit", sluit Domenicali af.

In het weekend van 17 tot 19 maart reist de Formule 1 naar Jeddah af voor de Saudische Grand Prix.

Domineecali preekt louter en alleen voor eigen FIA, en FOM parochie. Maar de collecte (overgemaakt in oliedollars) voorafgaande aan elke pro woestijnpreek levert nu éénmaal zo'n bull geld op, dat hij er de meest krankzinnige dingen van gaat zeggen.
