Chandhok denkt dat Mercedes aan Aston Martin-strategie moet denken

De seizoenstart van Mercedes was afgelopen weekend niet om over naar huis te schrijven. De Duitse renstal wil dit jaar weer meevechten om de zeges, maar voorlopig komt daar niets van uit. Mercedes moet nu terug naar de tekentafel en volgens Karun Chandhok moeten ze een voorbeeld nemen aan Aston Martin.

Aston Martin paste afgelopen seizoen een opvallende manier van kopiëren toe. De Britse renstal kende een lastige start van het jaar en introduceerde in Spanje een flinke hoeveelheid updates. Door deze updateregen werden de prestaties iets beter, maar wat vooral opviel was dat de wagen nogal veel leek op de Red Bull. Het zorgde ervoor dat Aston Martin iets beter voor de dag kwam.

Oud-coureur en huidig Sky Sports-analist Karun Chandhok denkt dat men bij Mercedes mogelijk deze strategie moet gaan toepassen. De Indiër is daar nogal duidelijk over in gesprek met zijn eigen werkgever. Chandhok: "Als ik nu naar de huidige tijdlijn kijk, dan denk ik dat Mercedes een beslissing moet gaan maken of ze de eerste twee jaar gaan weggooien om in het derde jaar weer mee te kunnen vechten voor de zeges. Ze moeten die keuze nu wel gaan maken. De architectuur en het concept moet voor alle teams wel duidelijk zijn in april."

      Asjeblieft hou op met die platitudes. Na-apen toont gewoon de incompetentie van je eigen engineers.
      Als het echt allemaal kopie materiaal is, dan heeft men in de fabriek bij Aston Martin helemaal NIETS om trots op te zijn.

      Kopieren is per defintie achterstand accepteren. Want je kopieert het hier en nu, daar waar de teams al werken aan de volgende stappen. Los van het feit dat kopieren betekent dat je een fylosofie overneemt die je mogelijk zelf niet eens volledig doorgrondt. En ga daar dan maar eens op doorontwikkelen. Succes niet bepaald gegarandeerd.
      Beetje afkijken als inspiratie is prima, maar als ontwerpteam moet je het ontwerp tot in de diepste vezels snappen. In het boek van Newey (How to build a car) wordt dit goed uitgelegd door hem.

      Volgens mij bedoelt Chandhok niet het nabouwen van de AM. Maar van de benadering om een slechte auto te laten transformeren naar een goede auto met een nieuwe filosofie.

      Ik denk ook dat het de engie manier is om zo weer de weg naar boven te vinden.

    Zelfs al kijken ze naar AM en RBR dan nog.
    AM is mede zo ver doordat ze ook daadwerkelijk kennis in de vorm van RBR personeel hebben.
    Mercedes komt niet verder dan de basis van het concept kopiëren. Of zal Toto als aandeelhouder de blauwdrukken van de AM kunnen bemachtigen?

      Probleem is dat zelfs als je die blauwdrukken hebt, je die niet zomaar mag gebruiken voor je eigen ontwerp. Je moet als constructeur je eigen aero-concept ontwikkelen en iedere stap van dat proces wordt gecontroleerd door de FIA.

      Bovendien is het bezitten van ontwerpgegevens van je concurrent niet toegestaan; denk maar terug aan McLaren in 2007 die data van Ferrari in hun bezit hadden gekregen.

      Zie mijn reactie hierboven. Een ontwerp, uitgetekend en wel, is het resultaat van een ontwerpfylosofie, op basis van origineel denken en begrijpen. Een blauwdruk krijgen en nabouwen mist dat aspect dus volledig en maakt de kans op begrijpen van de auto en het succesvol doorontwikkelen zeer klein. Kijk maar naar AM die eerder de W10 van het jaar ervoor kopieerde. Aanvankelijk waren ze snel, maar ze zakten erg snel weg omdat ze die auto niet effectief konden doorontwikkelen.
      Kopieren is achterstand accepteren.
