Wat viel op tijdens de vrijdag in Saoedi-Arabië?

Op het Jeddah Corniche Circuit in Saoedi-Arabië werden vandaag de eerste twee vrije trainingen van het Saoedische Grand Prix-weekend verreden. Max Verstappen noteerde in allebei de vrije trainingen de snelste tijd, maar er viel nog veel meer op in Jeddah. GPToday.net zet een aantal van de opvallendste dingen van de vrijdag op een rij.

Red Bull Racing

Max Verstappen ontbrak gisteren op de mediadag vanwege een buikgriep die hem eerder deze week hinderde. Vandaag was er echter niets te merken van Verstappens ziekte, in allebei de vrije trainingen was hij het snelste en ook zijn teamgenoot Sergio Perez noteerde twee keer een tijd in de top drie. Opvallend genoeg was het verschil met de concurrentie ditmaal niet zo groot als in Bahrein. In VT2, verreden onder dezelfde omstandigheden als de kwalificatie, was het verschil tussen Verstappen en nummer 2 slechts 0,208 seconden.

Alpine

Niet alleen de Red Bulls maakten indruk op het Saoedische asfalt, ook het team van Alpine was opvallend vlot. In de eerste vrije training viel het nog mee, maar in de tweede training klopte de Franse renstal op de deur van de topteams. Esteban Ocon reed onder het kunstlicht de vierde tijd op 0,436 seconden van Verstappen en Pierre Gasly eindigde de sessie op de zesde plaats. Alpine was hierdoor de derde renstal van de dag en dat biedt goede hoop in aanloop naar de kwalificatie van morgen.

Mercedes & Ferrari

Naast winnaars waren er ook vroege verliezers op de vrijdag in Jeddah. De teams van Ferrari en Mercedes weten dat ze nog werk moeten verrichten in de komende nacht. Beide teams bleven in de tweede vrije training steken in de middenmoot, Ferrari was in de eerste vrije training ook zeer zwak. In de Saoedische avond werd de Mercedes-eer nog gered door George Russell, maar de elfde tijd van Lewis Hamilton geeft het team de nodige kopzorgen. Ferrari-coureurs Charles Leclerc en Carlos Sainz noteerden de negende en de tiende tijd. De Italiaanse renstal heeft dus ook nog wat huiswerk te doen.

Als Ferrari en Mercedes niet heel snel weten te verbeteren, kakt dit seizoen als een plumpudding in elkaar.

Wat opviel is dat de baan nog steeds ruk is. Ik kan er nog steeds niet bij waarom circuits als Spa, Monza en Silverstone telkens aanpassingen moeten doen met veiligere uitloopzones... maar dit als veilig wordt gezien met een muur maximaal 2 meter van de ideale lijn.

Het is gewoon praktisch gezien de eerste sectie van Cota, dat met een parkeerplaats lijkt vanwege de veiligheid, maar dan nog sneller.

  Ik vind dit een geweldig circuit met die razendsnelle wijzigingen in richting, blinde bochten en minieme foutenmarge. Monaco on steroids. En dat het een nachtrace is, maakt het helemaal af.

  Ik ook, ik vind het een briljante baan waarop je pas kan zien hoe hard de F1 gaat. Ja het is gevaarlijk maar dat maakt het ook spannend.

He, hij is nu sneller dan de rest
In Bahrein was hij bijna 0.2 seconden langzamer dan Alonzo in VT2, zijn naaste concurrent naast Perez
Dus ongeveer 0.4 seconden sneller.
Wordt een hele saaie race.

  Ferrari had de kraan volledig dichtgedraaid als ik naar de toerentallen kijk.
  
  Nu deed Red Bull dat ook, maar hieveel vind ik altijd moeilijk in te schatten.
  
  Ik ga er wel van uit dat Ferrari niet 5de team is (volgend de VT2 lijst). Het is echt extra jammer dat Leclerc juist die straf krijgt. Ik zie toch niet Sainz het Verstappen moeilijk maken.
  
  Tsjah. Voorlopig is het een beetje hoop zoeken voor een spannende race vooraan.
