Krack ziet Aston Martin-successen ook als verdienste van Vettel

Het team van Aston Martin is zeer sterk aan het huidige Formule 1-seizoen begonnen. De Britse renstal eindigde driemaal op het podium en het vertrouwen is groot. Sebastian Vettel maakt de successen niet meer mee, de Duitse viervoudig wereldkampioen is immers met pensioen gegaan. Teambaas Mike Krack ziet Vettel als één van de aanjagers van de huidige successen.

Aston Martin is voor velen de verrassing van het huidige seizoen. De Britse renstal is momenteel het tweede team achter Red Bull Racing, met enige regelmaat zijn ze tevens sneller dan Mercedes en Ferrari. Fernando Alonso werd in de eerste drie races driemaal derde en gaf Aston Martin daarmee een grote boost aan het zelfvertrouwen van het team.

Verdienste

Volgens sommigen is Vettel dan ook te vroeg met pensioen gegaan. De Duitser kan nu immers niet gaan jagen op nieuwe successen. Aston Martin-teambaas Mike Krack ziet de zaakjes anders en legt het uit bij Motorsport.com: "We hebben vorig jaar meerdere overlegjes gehad. Hij zei daarin wat we konden doen en wat we niet moeten doen met de nieuwe auto. Ik denk dan ook dat dit zijn verdienste is."

Te vroeg gestopt?

De discussie over of Vettel te vroeg met pensioen is gegaan of niet, blijft echter wel bestaan. Teambaas Krack wil zich daar echter niet in mengen: "Dat zou je aan hem moeten vragen. We moeten zijn beslissing dan ook respecteren, hij heeft er lang over nagedacht. Nadat hij de beslissing had genomen moesten we verder en hij moet ook verder gaan. Of dat jammer is voor hem, dat zou je aan hem moeten vragen."

Tijdens een evenement in Wenen heeft Vettel gezegd dat hij de Formule 1 nog altijd op de voet volgt. De goede prestaties van Aston Martin kunnen hem het gevoel geven dat hij een jaar te vroeg is gestopt, maar zelf wil de ex-coureur uit Heppenheim daar weinig van weten.

"Het is altijd moeilijk om te voorspellen wat er volgend jaar gaat gebeuren. Daarom overheerst natuurlijk ook de blijdschap voor het team. Ik ben blij dat het zo goed gaat.
Het was duidelijk dat het beter zou gaan dan vorig jaar, omdat het toen best slecht ging. Maar afgezien van het scenario dat zich nu ontvouwt, heb ik mijn besluit genomen zonder na te denken over hoe het dit jaar zou verlopen."

Vettel gunt Alonso successen met Aston Martin
Nadat Vettel vlak voor de zomerstop zijn F1-pensioen aankondigde, schakelde Aston Martin razendsnel door enkele dagen later de komst van Alonso al aan te kondigen. De Spanjaard was in 2010 en 2012 de voornaamste tegenstander van Vettel in de strijd om de wereldtitel, die beide keren in het voordeel van de toenmalig Red Bull-coureur uitviel. Het huidige succes is Alonso gegund, vindt hij.
"Ik heb geen spijt van mijn pensioen. Natuurlijk zou het eenvoudiger zijn als de auto nu niet zo goed zou zijn, maar de blijdschap overheerst. Ik ben ook blij voor Fernando", vervolgt Vettel. "Hij heeft enkele jaren niet zo'n goed auto gehad, dus misschien maakt hij nu zijn tweede lente mee."

Het feit dat Vettel geen spijt heeft van zijn pensioen, komt ook door de activiteiten die hij na zijn racecarrière heeft opgepakt. Zo zette hij zich in de afgelopen jaren al in voor diverse milieu- en gelijkheidskwesties en daar is hij na zijn F1-loopbaan mee doorgegaan.
"Het gaat goed in mijn nieuwe situatie en ik kijk ernaar uit om me bezig te houden met dingen die me interesseren. Ik geniet van de tijd die ik thuis doorbreng met mijn kinderen en familie. Ik verzamel veel ideeën en denk daar even goed over na voordat er iets concreets uitkomt", aldus Vettel, die tegelijkertijd niet uitsluit dat hij ooit nog in een raceauto stapt.
"Op dit moment is alles mogelijk. Het kan alle kanten op. Het is ook mogelijk dat ik over zes maanden helemaal gek word van de bank en weer wil rijden. Maar het kan ook zo zijn dat mijn passie een heel andere kant opgaat en dat ik me op een ander project ga storten."
