Vowles verwacht chaos tijdens Azerbeidzjaans sprintweekend

Volgende week gaat het Formule 1-seizoen weer verder met de Azerbeidzjaanse Grand Prix. Op het stratencircuit in Bakoe werken de coureurs een sprintweekend af. Deze keuze is volgens velen nogal dubieus, de baan staat immers bekend om de chaotische races. Ook Williams-teambaas James Vowles heeft er zo zijn bedenkingen over.

In Azerbeidzjan wordt het eerste sprintweekend van het huidige seizoen verreden. Mogelijk wordt er in Bakoe tevens gewerkt met een nieuw sprintformat. Bij dit format worden er twee kwalificaties gereden. Eén van deze kwalificaties bepaald de startopstelling voor de race terwijl de andere de startopstelling voor de sprint bepaald. Het is echter nog niet duidelijk of dit format echt wordt gebruikt.

Het is bekend dat niet iedereen zit te wachten op een sprint in Bakoe. Ook Williams-teambaas James Vowles heeft er zo zijn twijfels over en hij wordt geciteerd door Motorsportweek: "Het wordt een sprintweekend met mogelijk een aantal andere regels dan voorheen. Op de achtergrond zijn we hard bezig om te kijken welke herstructurering we daarvoor nodig hebben. Of de regels nou veranderen of niet, een sprint op dat krappe circuit met de kasteelsectie kan voor een beetje chaos gaan zorgen."

      Niet helemaal. De allereerste GP hier was namelijk te saai voor woorden. Werkelijk slaapverwekkend. De edities erna waren echter een groot spectakel!

      We hebben beide dus gezien.

      Maar een sprintrace kan al voor leuke dingen zorgen.

      @damon. inderdaad, die eerste was afschuwelijk. vooral met dank aan de chaos die in de Gp2 races werd gecreëerd met zelfs een koploper die te vroeg aanging en dreigde de safetycar in te halen. de crash die daarop volgde zorgde voor een red flag en de volgende restart ging ook verkeerd. men werd er in de f1 paddock zo zenuwachtig van dat men geen risico met gewaagde strategie keuzes meer wilde nemen. de hardste banden meenemen hielp ook niet.

      eigenlijk verwacht ik een typisch Gp2 weekend. complete chaos in de eerste race en een slaapfeest in de tweede. anders om mag natuurlijk ook

      2016 was idd erg saai, maar ook weer niet. Rosberg had vrij spel doordat Hamilton dat weekend niet bij de les was, daardoor totaal geen strijd voor de overwinning. Voor het kampioenschap waren die 8 punten extra die Hamilton verloor cruciaal. Op een 13 in een dozijncircuit had Hamilton zich waarschijnlijk minder makkelijk laten verrassen. Dus wat mij betreft heeft Baku ook in 2016 goed werk geleverd. En Perez op het podium.

      Alle actie die in de laatste jaren op Bakoe geweest is, is te wijten aan safety car gerelateerde incidenten. Het is een oer saaie baan en een nog saaiere race.

      was is een safetycar gerelateerd incident nu dan weer? Meestal heb je eerst een incident en komt dan de SC. Na de SC is er idd altijd volop actie. Maar elders in de wedstrijd ook wel hoor. Bij de start zeker, rond de pitstops, er wordt volop ingehaald, soms remmen ze met 3 tegelijk aan voor bocht 1. En op het volgende rechte stuk(je) kun je met een goed opgezette aanval ook nog inhalen of counteren. Verder is het stukje bij het kasteel ook een goede test voor op de limiet rijdende coureurs zoals Leclerc en Hulkenberg. Eigenlijk ligt in elke bocht een crash wel op de loer, zeker als je twijfelt tussen rechtdoor gaan of toch insturen.

      Je snapt wat ik bedoelde @HupHolland. En daarnaast blijft het als een Duitse helm boven water staan dat Bakoe geen enkele leuke race heeft gehad zonder dat de safety car daar invloed op had.

    F1 CEO ‘more than nervous’ as Red Bull says ‘six teams’ over cost cap

    Formula 1 CEO Stefano Domenicali says he is “more than nervous” in anticipation of last year’s budget cap findings.

    A cost cap was first introduced in 2021 with the aim of reducing the spending gap between teams and making the sport more competitive in the long term.
    Red Bull was found to be in breach of the cap last year, overspending by $2.2 million on their way to its Drivers’ Championship since 2013.
    It was issued a fine of $7m as well as docked time allocated to development at its factory.

    Final submissions of the 2022 accounts were submitted last month and are due to be reviewed by the Cost Cap Administration.
    “I’m more than nervous,” Domenicali told Sky Sports.
    “I’m pretty sure that everyone understands now what the effect is if there is a breach, and I totally agree that the focus on this will actually be very big.
    I think that is a point of attention mainly for the credibility and to check if everyone is respecting that rule, but [it] has to be done earlier than later.”

    Rumours of Red Bull’s breach surfaced long before the FIA officially clarified the situation – a scenario that Domenicali hopes to avoid this year, if a party is guilty.
    “We are discussing and this is on the FIA’s side to make sure that the control and the certification will be done much earlier because the effect, if some teams will be over it, has to be done in a proper way in as short a time as possible to be more credible.
    We see other sports that are tackling the financial regulation with, in my opinion, too long a time for a reaction – and this is not good.”

    Some of Red Bull’s rivals insisted that the punishment issued to the Milton Keynes-based squad was not enough.
    However, they could find themselves in hot water later this year as Red Bull believes that more than half of the grid operated over the cap in 2022.
    “I think the current status is that six teams are over it,” said team advisor Dr Helmut Marko.
    “Inflation is something that was not calculable to that extent, especially when it comes to energy costs.”
