Hamilton trots op prestatie minder valide broer in BTCC: "Ik sprong op en neer"

Lewis Hamilton bezocht vorig weekend in incognito het British Touring Car Championship op Donington Park waar zijn 31-jarige broer Nicolas Hamilton rondreed.

Nicolas is minder valide door een hersenverlamming waardoor hij moeilijker zijn benen, armen en handen kan bewegen, maar liet zien dat het geen beperking hoeft te zijn om te kunnen presenteren. Hamilton was daarom ook zeer trots op de zesde plaats in de tweede wedstrijd van totaal drie.

"Mijn broer, waar ik ongelooflijk trots op ben. Hij blijft zich op een positieve manier uiten", zei de zevenvoudig kampioen op de persconferentie op donderdag. "Nicolas doet een sport waar veel mensen die minder valide zijn niet veel toegang toe krijgen. Eigenlijk zijn er helemaal geen mogelijkheden voor minder valide."

"Het was echt moeilijk voor hem. Hij vecht hard met de problematiek die hij heeft met zijn benen. En om dan vijfde of zesde te zien worden als een fan tussen het publiek, was mooi om te zien. Niemand wist dat ik daar was en ik sprong op en neer om hem te steunen. Erg trots."

Nicolas lijdt aan neurologische aandoening die tijdens de kindertijd optreedt als gevolg van een verwonding of misvorming in een ontwikkelend brein. Het bbeschadigt sommige delen van het lichaam, waaronder het zenuwstelsel - benen, armen en handen in het geval van Nicolas.

Deze chronische aandoening kan voor, tijdens of na de geboorte worden veroorzaakt en verergert niet gedurende iemands leven. Maar vanwege soms overmatige pijn en moeite met lopen, heeft Hamilton een rolstoel nodig ter ondersteuning.

  Dus? Wat wil je hier zeggen? Die mensen hebben GVD keihard gewerkt en vele pleziertjes opgeoffert om in deze situatie te geraken dat ze alles kunnen doen voor hun zoon. Je hebt alle mogelijkheden in onze maatschappij. En nee. Het zal niet altijd even eerlijk zijn. Maar dat is het leven. En als je geen nin hebt om daar tegen aan te boksen is dat ook goed. Maar ga dan niet janken op de mensen die er alles aan doen om zulke kansen te verkrijgen. Je bent niet helemaal goed. Dus kom ik inderdaad hier schuimbekkend reageren. Zoals jij dat noemt. En dan nog zeggen dat anderen beter moeten lezen. Doe niet net alsof je niet bedoelt wat je bedoelt. Niemand trapt erin.
  Ja ze hebben geld en kunnen dus hun gehandicapte zoon betere zorg en kansen geven. Wil niet elke ouder dat?
