Vasseur ziet Red Bull heersen: "We zijn ermee bezig"

Het team van Ferrari leek in Azerbeidzjan Red Bull Racing te kunnen gaan uitdagen. Charles Leclerc was de snelste in de kwalificatie en de Sprint Shootout, maar in de Sprint en de race kwam hij veel snelheid tekort ten opzichte van de Red Bulls. Ferrari-teambaas Frédéric Vasseur geeft aan dat hij weet wat de sterkste punten zijn van Red Bull.

Red Bull Racing is nog steeds oppermachtig in de koningsklasse van de autosport. Afgelopen weekend kwamen Sergio Perez en Max Verstappen als eerste en tweede over de streep. Hiermee pakte de Oostenrijkse renstal hun derde 1-2tje van het seizoen en zijn ze nog steeds de enige winnende renstal in 2023. Ook in Azerbeidzjan waren ze weer veel sneller dan de concurrentie.

DRS

Ferrari-teambaas Frédéric Vasseur had vanzelfsprekend gehoopt op een beter resultaat. Leclerc werd echter voorbij gereden alsof hij stilstond. In gesprek met de internationale media deelt Vasseur wat hem opviel aan Red Bull: "Eén van de sterke punten van Red Bull is het effect dat de DRS teweegbrengt. Dat is echter niet alleen het geval als je het vergelijkt met Ferrari, maar ook met de rest van de teams. We moeten allemaal ontdekken wat ze precies doen en we zijn ermee bezig."

Verbetering

Red Bull was in 2022 ook al ijzersterk in de Formule 1, maar het lijkt erop dat de Oostenrijkse renstal nu een veel grotere voorsprong heeft. Vasseur ziet dat anders: "We hebben het gat al gedeeltelijk verkleind vergeleken met vorig seizoen. Er is wel nog steeds wat ruimte voor verbetering. Daarnaast is Bakoe ook de moeilijkste plek om te verdedigen tegen een auto waar het DRS-effect zo groot is. Bij andere races zal het minder relevant zijn, maar afgelopen weekend was het een bittere pil."

  er zit er eentje bij Aston Martin en daar hadden ze dit weekend nogal wat problemen met DRS. Red Bull zelf had daar in 2021 en 2022 (oa Barcelona) ook geregeld last van. Als je daar naar kijkt zou Aston Martin misschien het geheim van Red Bull op het spoor kunnen zijn?

  Alle teams weten wel "wat" ze moeten doen, maar daarom niet onmiddellijk "hoe" ze het kunnen realiseren om "dat" te doen. Eenvoudig gezegd gaat het om de weerstand weghalen bij hoge snelheid. Dat was vroeger met een minder conventionele vering "gemakkelijker" te realiseren dan met de huidige regels.
  
  RB heeft dit met de conventionele vering intussen al verder geperfectioneerd waarbij ze met DRS een extra performantie boost vinden want ook zonder DRS kunnen ze op hoge snelheid heel wat drag overboord gooien. Waar ze in voorgaande seizoenen bijna altijd de kleinste achtervleugels (scheermessen) hadden, heeft men nu het comfort om grotere te plaatsen en toch niet te hoeven inboeten aan een behoorlijke topsnelheid.
  
  Ga er maar van uit dat het zijn tijd duurt vooraleer de anderen hebben achterhaald "hoe" ze daar in slagen en van zodra het op hun wagen verschijnt, het nog steeds een tijdje duurt vooraleer dat voor hen zo efficiënt lukt.

  In het stuk over de contractverlenging van Adrian Newey kwam Pierre Waché nog een paar keer zeer positief voorbij in de reactie van Christian Horner, als Waché zou vertrekken zou Horner zich nooit zo geuit hebben.

  Bovenal is Horner blij dat het aanblijven Newey stabiliteit binnen Red Bull betekent. De technische leiderschapsstructuur staat inmiddels naar wens en hoeft niet binnen afzienbare tijd op de schop.
  "Op deze manier kan Adrian zijn expertise op veel verschillende vlakken kwijt. Hij hoeft zich niet iedere dag met één specifiek onderwerp bezig te houden en die vrijheid vindt hij fijn.
