Szafnauer blijft optimistisch na opnieuw puntloos raceweekend voor Alpine

Het Formule 1-team van Alpine had gehoopt om de boel na de tegenvallende resultaten in Australië bij het Grand Prix-weekend in Baku te kunnen resetten. Na opnieuw een teleurstellend optreden in Azerbeidzjan, blijft teambaas Otmar Szafnauer optimistisch over de potentie van zijn A523-auto.

Afgelopen weekend introduceerde de Formule 1 een nieuw sprintweekendconcept. De nieuwe plannen betekenden dat er met ingang van de race in Baku twee kwalificatiesessies, een sprintrace en een hoofdrace verreden zullen worden. (Dit format geldt alleen bij races waar een sprintrace gepland staat)

Vooraf aan het weekend waren meerdere coureurs wel te spreken over de veranderingen; meer kansen om punten te scoren en een (bijna) risicovrije sprintrace had goed nieuws voor de teams en haar coureurs kunnen zijn. Echter viel het team van Alpine niet onder dat rijtje.

Na afloop van de racerij in Baku scoorde het team (en haar rijders Esteban Ocon en Pierre Gasly) een totaal aantal punten van nul; net zoals bij de voorlaatste race in Melbourne. Ondanks de dramatische resultaten van de afgelopen twee races is Alpine-teambaas Otmar Szafnauer optimistisch gestemd. De Roemeen-Amerikaanse topman lijkt vooral houvast te hebben aan de getoonde racepace van de A523-bolide in Australië, voordat het in de slotfase van die race misging.

"Op de vrijdag begonnen we al niet goed, en vanaf dat moment wisten we ons niet te herstellen. Bij de vrije training hadden we last van betrouwbaarheidsproblemen, wat inhield dat we niet genoeg tijd hadden om een goede set-up te maken. Deze problemen moeten we zoveel mogelijk zien te verminderen. In Australië lieten we zien dat we echt wel een goede racepace hebben, en in Miami zullen we een betere gelegenheid hebben om ons upgradepakket te ontgrendelen", sluit Szafnauer af.

Als je helemaal niet optimistisch bent dan wordt het heel moeilijk om de nodige motivatie te vinden in dit geval.

  In Melbourne was het op zich allemaal zo slecht nog niet. Gasly reed daar toch wel een puike race.... tot het natuurlijk allemaal mis ging. Maar puur kijkend naar de snelheid (hij reed 5e zeg ik uit mijn hoofd) was het best goed. Dat hij het uiteindelijk zelf verknald is niet de schuld van de auto.
  
  Dat ze nu net updates meenemen naar een weekend waar maar 1 training is... niet handig.
  
  Maar puur qua potentie is die wagen zo gek nog niet, en op zijn minst het 5e team.

  Met Fer/Mer/RB en Alpine als enige fabrieksteams is P4 of P5 in het WCC natuurlijk geen prestatie. Eerder een wanprestatie. Zeker als je al in je 8e seizoen zit.
  Ik zie het optimisme dan ook niet aangezien AM er ook nog voor staat en zelfs McLaren weer enigszins lijkt te herstellen.

  Een wanprestatie vind ik wat te ver gaan. Maar dat het allemaal erg matig is, ja mee eens. Maar datzelfde geldt ook gewoon voor McLaren imo. Als je kijkt naar afgelopen jaren zijn die juist weer verder weggezakt. De goede coureurs verbloemen het nog een beetje, maar veel is het allemaal niet.
  
  Alfa is trouwens ook een drama zeg. Die begonnen vorig jaar nog heel behoorlijk, maar dit jaar is het gewoon janken met de pet op.

met alle respect voor ieder zijn mening maar het begon al in VT1 met Gasly en het is tot aan de hoofdrace niet gestopt! en juist dat zou absoluut niet mogen bij een fabrieksteam! de makke is natuurlijk ook dat er slechts 1 team rijdt met de Renault PU maar dan nog!

ik ben het met Rimmer eens ik kwalificeer dit als een wanprestatie en moet nog maar zien of ze het vertrouwen dit jaar weer kunnen herstellen al hoop ik daar wel op! ik had me nog zo verheugd op de battle tussen Ocon en Gasly helaas tot op heden zijn ze dat mij verschuldigd ;-)
