Ook DRS-zones Miami flink ingekort

Dit weekend staat de Grand Prix van Miami op het programma. Autosportfederatie heeft voor deze editie van de race een aantal kleine dingetjes aangepast ten opzichte van vorig jaar. De meeste opvallende wijziging heeft te maken met de DRS-zones, ook op het Miami International Autodrome zijn deze namelijk ingekort.

Vorige week in Azerbeidzjan werden de DRS-zones al ingekort, niet iedereen was daar even blij mee. Veel coureurs en teambazen spraken zich er kritisch over uit. De aanpassing volgde na een aankondiging van de FIA, men liet weten dat op een aantal circuits de DRS-zones zouden worden aangepast. In navolging van Azerbeidzjan heeft de FIA nu dus ook de DRS-zones in Miami flink aangepakt.

Het detectiepunt van de eerste DRS-zone is als eerste aangepast. In 2022 lag dit punt op 83 meter na bocht acht, dit jaar ligt het detectiepunt op 90 meter na deze bocht. 105 meter na de negende bocht mogen de coureurs hun DRS activeren, vorig jaar mocht dit al na 67 meter. Het tweede DRS-detectiepunt ligt dit jaar 70 meter na bocht zestien, dit was eerste 73 meter. De DRS wordt nu 525 meter na bocht zestien geactiveerd, vorig jaar kon dat 75 meter eerder. Het laatste DRS-detectiepunt ligt op 15 meter na bocht zeventien, een jaar eerder was dit 19 meter.

    Met sterker functionerende DRS systemen is het goed dat men dit inkort. DRS is goed als hulp om treintjes te doorbreken en wat aktie te zien maar het mag geen vrijgeleide worden voor een inhaalbeweging. Dat speelt in de kaart van RB met de krachtigste DRS waarbij inhalen nog steeds als vrijgeleide werkt.

      Deze maatregel haalt wel de spanning weg uit de enige echte strijd op dit moment, die om 'best of the rest', die teams hebben (nog) geen tripple DRS-effect, en hebben dus meters nodig. De Bulls maakt het de pis nie lauw, die hoeven waarschijnlijk sowieso niemand in te halen.

      Dat moet je eens uitleggen. Tot nog toe staat Red Bull in de kwalificatie veel meer onder druk dan in de race. Bovendien schijnt Red Bull nu juist een zeer efficiente DRS te hebben waar ze dus minder gebruik van kunnen maken in de kwalificatie.

    Gewoon terug naar een soort KERS. Misschien leuk om toe te voegen aan de 26 motor. Extra pk dan een aantal keren kan worden ingezet door bijvoorbeeld solar of een waterstoftank of iets anders.

    Het is dan aan de coureur om te bepalen waar hij denkt dit nodig te zijn ipv op door de fia gekozen selecte stukken van de baan.

      Eh, dat bestaat al: de coureurs hebben ERS (zoals het tegenwoordig heet) tot hun beschikking en dat kunnen ze naar believen inzetten. Dat strategische element spreekt mij aan.

      Overigens is het 'harvesten' (oogsten/vergaren) van energie niet zonder risico: het kost snelheid. Rosberg maakte hier een fout mee aan het begin van de race in Barcelona 2016 en daardoor rook Hamilton een halve kans op een overtake. Vervolgens eindigden Hamilton en Rosberg samen in de grindbak. Hoe die in die race verder is verlopen, weet ik niet meer.

    Tot nu toe hebben we pas 1 echt circuit gehad. Misschien moeten ze daar eens naar kijken. Dit weekend weer zo’n stratenomloop en dan komt monaco er weer aan.
