Gil de Ferran krijgt nieuwe rol binnen McLaren

Bij het team van McLaren loopt dit weekend een opvallende naam mee. In de pitbox werd namelijk al meerdere keren oud-coureur Gil de Ferran gespot. De Ferran was in het verleden al werkzaam voor het team en teambaas Andrea Stella laat weten dat hij een nieuwe rol heeft gekregen.

McLaren heeft dit jaar een flinke reorganisatie doorgevoerd. De Britse renstal heeft technisch gebied veel nieuwe namen aangetrokken en een aantal andere laten vertrekken. De meest in het oog springende exit is die van James Key, hij gaat het team verlaten. Eén van de kopstukken van de nieuwe technische structuur is voormalig Ferrari-medewerker David Sanchez.

Ook de Ferran is nu aangetrokken als onderdeel van de reorganisatie. De voormalig winnaar van de Indy 500 was eerder van 2018 tot en met 2020 betrokken bij het team en is nu consultant. Teambaas Andrea Stella legt het uit in gesprek met Motorsport.com: "Gil zal vooral gaan fungeren als consultant. Dat is een rol die niet operationeel is en hij zal vooral zijn taken als consultant gaan uitvoeren. Daarbij zal hij mijzelf en COO Piers Thynne over op de hoogte houden."
