Alpine heeft grote plannen: Nieuwe simulator en vergroting technisch team in pijplijn

Het Franse Alpine wil maar al te graag in de komende jaren weer dichter bij de topteams verkeren. Om daar te komen, zijn daar een aantal grote investeringen en vernieuwingen voor vereist. Binnen het hoofdkwartier in Viry heeft men nu eindelijk maar toch het licht gezien: vanaf 2025 moet er een nieuwe simulator klaarstaan, inclusief een nieuwe simulatormanager, en wil de renstal haar technische afdeling flink vergroten.

Tijdens de afgelopen winterstop probeerde het Formule 1-team van Alpine haar positieve momentum richting 2023 voort te zetten. Dit mislukte; het team bleef in haar middenveldpositie hangen en zag concurrent Aston Martin met zevenmijlslaarzen voorbij komen. Ook zijn de resultaten met een dubbelcrash in Australië en betrouwbaarheidsproblemen de race daarop in Baku nog niet al te best. Daarom moeten er zo snel mogelijk veranderingen plaatsvinden, menen CEO Laurent Rossi en teambaas Otmar Szafnauer.

Szafnauer, de Roemeen-Amerikaanse ingenieur van oorsprong en nu kapitein van het Franse schip, laat weten vanaf 2025 de nieuwe simulator in gebruik te nemen. De huidige simulator is zo'n twintig jaar oud en is niet meer de beste om te helpen om de set-up voor een raceweekend voor te bereiden. Szafnauer licht toe: "Als je de (bijna) perfecte simulatoronderdelen hebt, dan kun je elk weekend bijna volledig optimaliseren. We hebben mensen aangenomen die ons helpen om een preciezere rondetijd te rijden. Als je dat werk op de simulator kan doen, dan zit je er op het echte circuit goed bij", vertelt Szafnauer.

Niet alleen bij de simulatorafdeling zal er het een en ander gaan veranderen. Ook op het technisch vlak worden er stappen gemaakt: "Je moet het jezelf zo makkelijk mogelijk maken. Als een team zoals Red Bull een aerodynamics team van vijftig mensen heeft, dan heeft de topman daarvan de ideeën van iedereen in zijn hoofd. Dus als je hem verplaatst, heeft hij al die plannen in z'n brein."

"Maar, dan zou je nog steeds die vijftig mensen onder hem nodig hebben om de ontwikkelingen door te zetten. Dus met Red Bull als voorbeeld, zij hebben zo'n vijftig mensen (op die afdeling). Wij hebben er momenteel 38, en we willen naar 45. We hebben dus ruimte om zeven of acht ervaren aerodynamici tot ons aan te trekken", concludeert Szafnauer.
