Maleisië aast op comeback op F1-kalender: "Kwestie van tijd"

De Grand Prix van Maleisië op het circuit van Sepang was jarenlang een vaste bewoner van de Formule 1-kalender. De ticketverkoop liep in de laatste jaren echter terug waardoor de race in 2017 voor het laatst werd verreden. In Maleisië hoopt men op een comeback, al hangt dat wel van het financiële plaatje af.

De Maleisische Grand Prix was jarenlang één van de populairste races onder de coureurs. Het circuit van Sepang was uitdagend en het wispelturige weer zorgde meer dan eens voor spectaculaire regenraces. Toch nam de interesse af en werd in 2017 de tot dusver laatste editie van de Grand Prix van Maleisië verreden. Veel fans en coureurs baalden daarvan.

Geld

In Maleisië aast men op een comeback op de Formule 1-kalender. Er speelt echter wel iets mee, want het financiële plaatje is een ander verhaal. Motorsport Association of Malaysia-president Tan Sri Mokhzani spreekt zich uit bij de New Straits Times: "Wat betreft het organiseren: dat is geen probleem. Het is alleen de vraag wie het gaat betalen en of we het ons kunnen veroorloven. Ik heb geen idee hoeveel de race nu zou kosten, het is absoluut duurder dan in 2017. De sport is populairder dan eerst en heeft een nieuw publiek bereikt met Drive to Survive."

Kwestie van tijd

Mokhzani weet dat niet alleen de organisatie een comeback ziet zitten, maar ook de coureurs en een grote hoeveelheid Formule 1-fans. Hij is dan ook positief gestemd over een nieuwe Grand Prix: "We krijgen van de coureurs zelf te horen dat Sepang een uitdagend circuit is die ze graag zien terug keren op de kalender. We hebben altijd een goed band gehad met de organisatoren, we kennen elkaar al sinds 1996 toen we voor het eerst met elkaar spraken. Het is dus gewoon een kwestie van tijd."

Graag, niet alleen een mooi circuit maar ook de tribunes geven het een zekere ambiance.. voor mij inmiddels een architectonische klassieker.

Hongarije heeft een gloednieuw circuit geopend genaamd Balaton Park, lijkt een goede vervanger voor de Hungaroring.

Het grote geld zit in Abu Dhabi en Bahrein en zo, en da's jammer, want als er circuits geslachtofferd moeten worden zou ik inzetten op dìe! Maleisië -met z'n karakteristieke 2 lange rechts stukken met haarspeld aan elkaar- was vaak een vette race.
