Russen eisen geld van de Formule 1: "Wel betaald, maar geen spektakel"

Sinds het uitbreken van de oorlog in Oekraïne heeft de Formule 1 alle banden met Rusland verbroken. Dat betekende ook het einde van de Russische Grand Prix. In Sotsji zijn ze niet blij met de manier waarop dit gebeurde. Sterker nog, de organisatie van deze race eist nog steeds geld van de Formule 1.

Vlak na het uitbreken van de oorlog in Oekraïne nam de Formule 1 maatregelen. Eerst werd de Russische Grand Prix van de kalender geschrapt en daarna werden de banden met de Russen definitief verbroken en werden de contracten verscheurd. De Russische organisatie was daar niet blij mee en is vooral woest over een aantal financiële zaken.

Geld teruggeven

De geldkwestie blijft na ruim een jaar voor chagrijn zorgen bij de organisatie van de voormalige race op het circuit van Sotsji. Promotor Alexey Titov wil namelijk geld zien en deelde dat met zijn landgenoten van Tass: "Ze zijn ons geld schuldig. We vragen de Formule 1 om het terug te geven. Het is wel betaald, maar er was geen spektakel. Ze geven toe dat ze een schuld hebben, maar ze zeggen ook dat ze technisch gezien het geld niet terug kunnen geven. Wij werden als organisatie gecontroleerd door de VTB Bank, dat was een technische sponsor. Er zijn dus legale sancties die in de weg liggen."

Geen gemis

Titov gaat ervanuit dat het geld wordt terugbetaald. De Russische Grand Prix zal voorlopig in ieder geval niet gaan terugkeren, want de Formule 1 heeft alle banden verbroken met de organisatie. Titov mist de sport niet en draait daar ook niet om heen: "Ik mis de Formule 1 zeker niet. Ze zijn vertrokken en wij hadden de kans om onze races op de kaart te zetten, dat hebben we gedaan. Dit was voor iedereen het beste."
