Italiaanse overheid wil Monza én Imola op F1-kalender houden

Italië is het enige Europese land dat twee Grands Prix organiseert. Aankomend weekend wordt de Grand Prix van Emilia-Romagna verreden op het circuit van Imola en later dit jaar volgt de Italiaanse Grand Prix in Monza. De Italiaanse overheid wil er alles aan doen om beide races te behouden.

Beide circuits in Italië zijn zeer geliefd bij de fans en de coureurs. Imola keerde in coronajaar 2020 terug op de kalender en kreeg daarna een nieuw contract. Monza is en blijft één van de klassiekers van de Formule 1-kalender, maar Formule 1 CEO Stefano Domenicali gaf al eerder aan dat dit geen garanties biedt. De kans is dan ook aanwezig dat één van de races moet gaan vrezen voor zijn plekje.

De Italiaanse politiek wil echter allebei de Grands Prix behouden omdat ze van mening zijn dat ze van cultureel belang zijn. De Italiaanse vicepremier Matteo Salvini is er in gesprek met La Gazzetta dello Sport nogal duidelijk over: "Het is ons doel om de toekomst van de beide Grands Prix veilig te stellen. Ze moeten absoluut naast elkaar bestaan. De twee races staan voor werk, toerisme, schoonheid, identiteit, traditie, onderzoek en innovatie. Ze zijn symbolen voor rijkdom en werk, dat laatste is tegenwoordig heilig."

Dat zal lastig gaan nu de kalender steeds verder uitpuilt. Misschien zou een roulatie idee wat zijn. Zoals in Duitsland het geval was jaren geleden.
