Imola hoopt op contractverlenging na cancelen Grand Prix

De Grand Prix van Emilia-Romagna op het circuit van Imola gaat aankomend weekend niet door. Gisteren maakte de Formule 1 het nieuws bekend en de beslissing kon op veel steun rekenen. Ook de Italiaanse autosportbond staat achter de beslissing en men hoopt dat door deze problemen ervoor zorgen dat het contract met een jaar wordt verlengd.

De regio Emilia-Romagna is deze week getroffen door zware neerslag. Veel steden en dorpen zijn ondergelopen en de overstromingen zorgen voor veel chaos. De wegen rondom het circuit van Imola zijn afgesloten en de FIA en de Formule 1 vonden het dan ook niet gepast om de race te laten doorgaan. Vrijwel iedereen staat achter die beslissing.

Ook de Automobile Club d'Italia (ACI) staat achter de beslissing van de Formule 1. ACI-president Angelo Sticchi Damiani stelt dat hij enorm is geraakt door de ramp in Emilia-Romagna. Wat dit betekent voor de toekomst van de Grand Prix weet Sticchi Damiani niet. Hij wordt geciteerd door RaceFans: "Deze annulering was onvermijdelijk als je kijkt naar de dramatische situatie. Als je kijkt naar de complexiteit van de kalender, dan kan je je voorstellen dat de editie van 2023 zal worden ingehaald in 2026. Momenteel is dat allemaal echter niet de prioriteit."

Ik had sinds 1 mei 1994 een grafhekel aan Imola maar eerlijk gezegd is het een geweldig circuit dat net als Spa op de kalender MOET staan imho.
