Newey verklaart Red Bull-succes: "Als je op de goede weg bent moet je doorgaan"

Het team van Red Bull Racing is momenteel oppermachtig in de Formule 1. De Oostenrijkse renstal heeft met Max Verstappen en Sergio Perez de eerste vijf Grands Prix van het seizoen gewonnen. Adrian Newey is verantwoordelijk voor het ontwerp van de huidige succesauto en hij legt uit wat de RB19 zo goed maakt.

Red Bull lijkt na slechts vijf raceweekenden al de grote titelfavoriet. De voorsprong op de concurrentie van Aston Martin, Ferrari en Mercedes is zeer groot. Het huidige pakket werkt zoals men wil en coureurs Max Verstappen en Sergio Perez lijken zich op hun gemak te voelen in de RB19. De wagen is de opvolger van de RB18 waarmee het team vorig jaar uiterst succesvol was.

Visie

Ontwerper Adrian Newey is het brein achter de huidige auto. De Brit was in het verleden al verantwoordelijk voor veel kampioenswagens en in de Talking Bull-podcast legt hij uit waarom de huidige auto zo goed voor de dag komt: "Je hebt een visie op wat je probeert te bedenken, die wordt dan weer geleid door aerodynamica, de windtunnel en het mechanische ontwerp. Je probeert het pakket te laten werken als een geheel. Daarom probeer je alle disciplines samen te voegen tot wat je hoopt dat het snelste pakket is."

Doorontwikkeling

Volgens Newey is de huidige RB19 een betere versie van de succesvolle RB18 van vorig jaar. De Britse topontwerper vindt het meer dan logisch dat hij deze lijn vast heeft gehouden: "Als je eenmaal op de goede weg bent, dan moet je doorgaan. Dat is natuurlijk niet de bedoeling wanneer er duidelijke problemen zijn. Tot nu toe lijkt het basisconcept goed te werken. De auto van dit jaar is vergeleken met vorig jaar echt een duidelijk verbeterde versie."

Dit is precies wat het verschil maakt met Ferrari en Mercedes. Hun concepten waren potentieel ook zeer goed, maar die van RB bleek de meeste ruimte tot doorontwikkelen te bieden.

Als Mercedes a la AM voorjaar 2023 voor het RB concept was gegaan steden ze misschien nu al mee om de winst.
