Alpine-topman maakt gedurfde voorspelling voor GP Spanje: "Zullen voor Mercedes zitten"

De sfeer is goed binnen het Franse Formule 1-team Alpine. Na een derde plaats voor Esteban Ocon bij de Grand Prix van Monaco, denkt de equipe de goede performance richting Barcelona mee te kunnen nemen en op het circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya met Mercedes en Ferrari te kunnen vechten. Dat is de gedurfde voorspelling van technisch directeur Alan Permane.

Binnen de fabrieken in Enstone en Viry is het gehalte aan zelfvertrouwen momenteel zeer hoog. Esteban Ocon wist afgelopen weekend een knappe derde plaats te behalen, en volgens technisch directeur Alan Permane zit er nog meer goeds aan te komen. Volgens hem kan de Franse renstal aankomend weekend bij de Grand Prix van Spanje bij Red Bulls achtervolgers de aansluiting vinden.

Als reactie op het sterke resultaat in Monaco, antwoordt Permane op de vraag of Alpine een speciale auto heeft gemaakt voor de stratenrace in het prinsendom: "Nee, dit was denk ik geen auto specifiek voor Monaco. De upgrades werken gewoon goed. Ik verwacht dat we bij de volgende race (Spanje) voor Mercedes zullen zitten en met Ferrari kunnen vechten. Max (Verstappen) is te ver van ons vandaan, en als Checo (Pérez) een goede dag heeft, idem dito."

"Fernando (Alonso) zal een lastige worden, maar ik zie niet in waarom we niet met Ferrari en Mercedes kunnen vechten, zoals we bij zowel Monaco als Miami hebben gezien", meent Permane.

Misschien bedoelt Permane dat Alpine voor Mercedes staat in de pitstraat?

  Ik zou het leuk vinden. Mercedes in korte tijd van eerste naar vierde/vijfde team. Het kan raar lopen in de F1. Maar goed, eerst maar eens zien hoe het daadwerkelijk gaat.

Nogal gewaagde uitspraak, eerlijk gezegd. In Miami zaten ze sowieso allebei nog achter beide Benz coureurs, toen nog zonder de W14 update en op basis van Monaco verwachtingen uitspreken is ook nogal riskant door de totaal andere karakteristiek van de baan en de nagenoeg onmogelijkheid om in te halen.

  Ze zitten het hele seizoen al kort achter Mercedes, Ferrari en AM, het was eerder dat ze bijna iedere kwalificatie en race hebben lopen kloten en in Monaco viel alles goed in de kwalificatie voor Ocon.
  
  Denk zelf dat ze dit weekend weer net achter die anderen zitten.

Het zat er wel aan te komen. Tijdens de eerste test dit jaar hadden ze bijna dezelfde auto als vorig jaar en gaven ze aan dat ze nog volop i ontwikkeling waren. Dat komt er nu uit en ze maken stapjes. Niet zoals AM 1 grote stap maar langzaam aan werken ze aan de snelheid en ik hoop ook aan de betrouwbaarheid.

Gewaagd. Ze waren in de race in Monaco duidelijk trager dan Mercedes. Maar Spanje heeft nu vooral veel hoge snelheidsbochten. De 'oude' WD14 was daar absoluut niet goed in. Alpine redelijk.

Maar Mercedes heeft wel een berg updates. Overigens Alpine ook. Ik wacht af.
