Albon blij met aangepaste lay-out Spanje: "Was altijd een lelijk stukje"

Het circuit in Barcelona ziet er dit weekend iets anders uit dan in de voorgaande jaren. De organisatie heeft namelijk ingegrepen en heeft de laatste chicane op de baan uit de lay-out gesloopt. De baan is nu zo'n achttien meter korter en de coureurs juichen het besluit toe. Ook Alexander Albon is er blij mee.

In de afgelopen weken ging het veelvuldig over de actie op de baan. Niet alle races waren namelijk spannend en men wees als oorzaak naar de ingekorte DRS-zones. Dit weekend speelt dat geen rol en heeft men dus ook ingegrepen in de laatste sector. De chicane was voor veel coureurs een doorn in het oog en het besluit om dit gedeelte van de baan aan te passen, zorgt dan ook voor veel tevredenheid.

Ook Williams-coureur Alexander Albon is er zeer blij mee. De Thaise Brit was geen fan van de chicane en deelt zijn vreugde met Motorsport.com: "Ik denkt dat het een heel erg goed besluit is. Ik ken geen coureur die hier negatief over denkt. Het was altijd een beetje een lelijk stukje circuit. Het was lastig, het verpestte de rest van de baan omdat de flow anders was. Dit is dus geweldig. Ik hoop dat het het racen verbetert. Vorig jaar kon je in de tiende en de twaalfde bocht al goed volgen. Er was altijd al vrije lucht, maar in bocht dertien, veertien en vijftien niet. Dit wordt een van de betere banen om in te halen."

Williams leek aan het begin dit jaar voor hun doen aardig voor de dag te komen met snelle rondentijden en een puntenfinish, maar ondertussen bungelen ze weer stijf onderaan de ranglijst. En met deze kneus achter het stuur, die maar met moeite Sargeant (zeker geen wereldwonder) achter zich kan houden, gaan ze de oorlog al helemaal niet winnen.
